When Harry opened his eyes, Ginny was sitting cross-legged beside him, staring at him as if she'd never seen him before.

"Gin?"

She swallowed and said nothing. She blinked.

Harry rubbed the sleep from his eyes and propped himself up on his elbow, the cotton sheet brushing against his bare chest. The room was cool, crisp. The cracked window allowed in the faint autumn breeze.

Ginny had the sheet pulled taut around her breasts, her arms folded over it. There were red scratches by each of her elbows where her nails had been digging. She was upset. Nervous. It took a lot to push Ginny to this edge.

"Is the baby--"

"He's fine. Asleep."

Still, Harry stole a glance at the crib across the room. The seven-month-old was nestled beneath a thick layer of knitted blankets, slumbering peacefully. His heart, which he hadn't realized was pounding, began to beat a slower, steadier tattoo against his ribcage.

"What's wrong, love?"

Ginny was motionless for a moment before her large brown eyes, rimmed with red, filled with tears. "I…" She looked away and placed a hand on Harry's chest. He could feel his heart quicken at her touch, even after all these years. "I could have lost you."

He furrowed his brow.

She rolled her eyes when she took in his puzzled expression and chuckled slightly. "You know what I mean, you silly git."

"But you didn't lose me. It's over. It's been years…"

"Don't you ever think 'what if'?"

"I try not to, considering what the 'if' entails."

"I can't help it sometimes. There are times when I wake up completely in a state because…" she sniffled.

Harry took her hand and kissed her knuckles. "I'm here, aren't I?"

Ginny nodded resolutely.

"And really, Gin, there's only one thing now that may actually be my demise."

Ginny raised a concerned eyebrow.

"Diaper duty."

His copper-haired wife let out a strangled laugh. He could hear the tears coating her throat from which the laugh erupted and he soothingly kissed her hand again. "We're here. We're alive. We've got James. No use letting the past ruin that for us, eh?"

"You're right. I'm sorry. I sound like my mum, don't I?"

"As long as you don't act too much like her that I stop seeing Ginny and start seeing Molly…that'd make Thursday night dinners a bit awkward, don't you think?"

Ginny snorted with laughter. She clamped a hand over her mouth and looked over at the crib. James was still sleeping.

Harry smiled and pulled Ginny in for a kiss. "Let's enjoy his sleeping while it lasts…" Harry mumbled against Ginny's mouth. He closed his eyes and enjoyed the kiss as if it were the first one, all softness and sweetness. She tasted and felt the same as she did that day, all those years ago.

When Ginny leaned back, she peered at Harry through contemplative, shy eyes. And, when Harry was preparing to steal another kiss, she punched him in the arm.

"What the!?"

"Don't joke about dying ever again, mister!"

His bicep let out a painful throb. "Oye, Gin…"

"And don't…don't do anything that'll put you in that kind of danger again, okay? I couldn't take it…"

"I promise I won't go out of my way to look for dark wizards who want to kill me." He made a cross over his heart.

Ginny rolled her eyes. "Cute."

"That's why you love me."

"Don't push your luck."

Harry laughed and shook his head. He knew better than to offer a retort. She got like this sometimes-- wracked with fear over what could have been. He knew there was nothing he could truly do to assuage her worry except for be there with her. He supposed it was lucky for him that he had no intention of going anywhere.
