Buffy Comic ... 50 Issues!

Mar 27, 2007 16:53

When news first broke that Joss Whedon was beginning an official Season 8 of Buffy in comic form, it was going to run for 22 issues just as a US TV series runs for 22 episodes per season.

A few months later, the number was upped to 'around 30.'

Most recently, Scott Allie of Dark Horse has stated in an interview that the new Buffy comic will run for 50 issues!  I did the math:  with one coming out each month -- if they can stick to the publishing schedule, and at times, that can be a big if in comics -- that means we'll have four years of Buffy!

And it's going to be a complex read!  As with a TV season of Buffy, there will be an overall story arc with a big bad.  But individual issues will occasionally do work that might not seem related to the arc.  As readers, we're to hold these puzzle pieces in mind to see how it all forms a bigger, more complex picture at the end - my favorite type of reading!

And the series is going to have a subtitle added to issue 6 and onwards.  Hmmm.  What could Joss be up to?  [Besides this bizarrely hilarious interview?]

Whatever it is, I'm on board, even if I'll need to buy another comic box!

If, like me, you're already having a hard time waiting for issue 2, I've found some wonderful fan-made Angel comics to tide you over!

By
astridv, with a story written by
yhlee, is the nicely long "Synth."  This story is actually a crossover that combines Angel with Joss Whedon's future-Slayer comic Fray.  It stars Angel, Gunn, and Melaka.  The art is amazing, there's an action/adventure plot, and it's set in a dystopic world.  I've read Fray and watched Angel, so I'm able to follow everything, but I'd say you'd need familiarity with Angel to fully appreciate.

Then there's "Smile Time: The Comic" by
astridv - it's set during the eponymous episode of Angel.  Yes, that's right - puppet Angel, and puppet Angel interacting with Spike!  The artwork is wonderful and the characterizations are spot on - don't miss this one!  Even if you've only watched Buffy, you can still appreciate this - heck, it might work even if you've never seen either show.

I highly recommend both of them, but if you're hesitant, check out the "Smile Time" one first -- it's shorter, it's funnier, and it keeps you in the normal Buffyverse.  Then consider giving "Synth" a try - it's very well done!  Another thing -
astridv is still enjoying and responding to comments, even on the older piece.
