Rupert Giles, a man of so many shades of grey.
Besides, your Giles is haunted -by so many things : his past, his deeds, his duty and his failures.
The parallel with the golem is working very well, confronting Giles' duty of servicing the world and his own potential for destruction, his need for attention but his will to keep the Scoobies at bay, his inner fragility as a mere human being and his strength as a Watcher.

Thank you so much for this fic.

Thanks! It's so lovely to hear that you enjoyed the fic and that the golem story resonated! I've long thought Giles the most haunted character on Buffy, and I'm glad that came through for you.

Ouch. You captured the hopeless pain of season7 very well, thanks for this.

Thanks! I'm very happy that you liked the story! The First certainly knew what buttons to push to torment.

Wow! This story really had me thinking about the experiences Rupert must have had with the First. It's a shame the show didn't explore this angle more.

Amazing writing and one of the best things I've read in a while.

Thanks! I'm so glad you enjoyed the story! When I think back on it, I'm almost shocked the show never showed the First having a go at Giles.
