One of the impacts of my trade is that I can’t start a personal project without knowing the costs and timeline. You may remember that one of the items on my fantasy wish list was a marine aquarium. Without going into greater detail this is a high level estimate what I need to "start" if I bought everything new.
180 gallon half cylinder aquarium $2,200.00
Black background $85.00
Fluval Fx6 Canister Filter $340.00
Stand & Canopy - Dark Walnut finish $1,708
Plumbed overflows $150
Reef Sump, (Plumbing, Filter, Plumbing Supp) $882.00
LED Reef lights 200.00
So without setting it up, testing the water quality, adding base stone or buying any animals the cost starts at $5565.00. That is amazing to me. One it is unlikely I can ever spend this much on a hobby unless I somehow won the lottery, two if I tried to spend this much I believe different family members would shoot me and three since I enjoy researching in my free time I’ll be digging into this for a few years.
The next questions are how much would this setup weigh when loaded, where could it possibly exist so I could enjoy it and how would it affect septic tank maintenance.
