The change of the guard.

[I got into one of those confounded political circle-jerks on Facebook (with someone who stooped to pseudo-argumentative devices that disappointed me, coming from him). I ended up typing a response that-even after aggressive editing-was a bit long-winded for a FB comment. Here is a more broadly worded, and expanded variation of the full version.]

If you think that Obama's platform is as 'left' as 'left' gets, you're not thinking very hard.

On the subject of how expensive the next four years will be: Simply saying 'let the spending begin', as if it is a forgone conclusion, is to indulge in fiction (not to mention a horribly glib platitude), and it does not form a foundation for an argument. It remains to be seen what the new guard will do.

As for the past four years: i can point out an over $10 billion undeclared war (with conspicuous-perhaps treasonous-ulterior motives), and a $700 billion no-strings subsidy to a private banking consortium.

For what it's worth, i'm not thrilled with Obama, either-much less Biden. They both have their skeletons. But McCain strikes me as too insulated from the concerns of non-millionaires, and i live in fear that Palin's mind will collapse into a black hole, and devour the earth. (Would you really want that bimbo to be next in line? She gives me Quayle flashbacks-a cliché comparison, but inevitable! McCain really shot himself in the foot, there, IMHO.)

Meanwhile, let's not forget that the President is not the king (Dubya's infamous fantasies aside). There is still congress-which we the freakin' people are supposed to have at least an indirect voice in. Our system was very carefully designed not to give any one entity too much power. As molested is it has become, some of that still remains. It's not quite out of our hands. And the fat lady ain't sung yet!
