Damn you Northwestern Wildcat football! How dare you toy with my emotions like that.
You raised up my hopes in mid-season with some amazing Big 10 wins, brought me anxious ecstasy at the prospect of a bowl game (true, it's the Motor City Bowl...but a bowl's a bowl), sent me into exultant joy by maintaining a strong lead over Bowling Green for three straight quarters, and then dashed my dreams against the rocks of disappointment by choking in the 4th and giving up completely in the last three minutes.
Bowling Green - 28
Northwestern U - 24
Oh, well. At least Jason Wright set a bowl record for most all-purpose yards. My god, that boy can run. I think he's actually evolved from some sort of gazelle.
Aside from disappointing football, it's been a pretty laid-back winter break. Sleeping (usually til noon), playing guitar, doing some graphic design for my dad, helping wire up a new computer network in his office, watching Adult Swim and the Daily Show, and reading.
A few nights ago, my good friend Natalie came over with some poetry and lyrics she'd written, and we sat down to write a song together. Her lyrics were kind of scattershod and abstract, but after she explained some of her main ideas to me, the song started to flow. In two hours, we'd written a pretty solid pop-folk song about not letting others' opinions and judgements keep you from expressing yourself.
I really dig helping people create music. It's just as much fun to collaborate with someone else's ideas as it is to craft my own. That's part of why I want to be a producer...I feel like I'm good at getting a sense of someone's musical vision or central idea and helping them craft that into something they couldn't do on their own. Aaron Burg (
watermarktrio ) agreed to let me produce some of his music this quarter. I'm extremely excited to apply my studio experience to someone else's music. I'd like to try and write some songs with him, too, if he digs the idea.
Tonight I'm hanging out with Dahlia, and tomorrow, my whole family leaves for our big New Years Cruise. We're headed to Key West, the Grand Caymans, and Cozumel, and we'll be back on January 4th (just enough time for me to do laundry, pack again, and hop on a plane to Chicago to catch my Monday night Advertising class). Happy New Year everyone! See you in 2004!!!
