I'm trying to calm myself from my over hyped status of teetering on the verge of caffeine overdose and over ambitious ideals. So as most you of know, as of late I have been dabbling in this over intoxicating world of social activism, and have found somewhat of a niche nestled in between ethnography and documentary film. Recently I have devised a project in the realm of auto-ethnography, but on a neighborhood/city wide community scale.
With the help of Rachel, anthropology professor and co-founder of the Neighborhood Story Project in New Orleans, and the backing of several peers, I have decided to take the leap and expand what was once a class project into a full fledged Zine, to be released on a quarterly basis.
What I hope to achieve with this Zine is the empowerment of those within marginalized communities, and more specifically, those within the queer community. I plan is to start small, within a community of peers of both university and professional status, in which through time, hopefully expand out to include those throughout the queer community of New Orleans, and perhaps further. The Zine will be an exercise in free writing, one in which will give voices to those often disempowered by society, and especially by our own community leaders. This Zine is focused more on those within the minority of the queer community, whether through their ethnicity, religious or spiritual beliefs, or ways in which they identify themselves.
I'm hoping to create a safe space in which we will meet on a weekly basis to hold writing workshops as well as production meetings in terms of the Zine's layout and overall appearance and distribution possibilities. I'll be posting a link to the first issue of the Zine, the one I completed for my neighborhood ethnography class last semester. I will distribute these, of course after a rigorous editing process (after perusing its pages, I'm noticing some glaring grammatical and spelling errors). I'm going to post the link to the download from rapidshare.com. I apologize because it may take a minute or two to access it as well as another minute or so to download it.

I hope to eventually start up a website for the Zine, one in which people will be invited to offer constructive criticisms on potential pieces as a way of participating in the workshop process. If you're interested in any way of participating in the project, let me know! Or if you wish to give monetary donations to help with printing and website costs, that will also rock, but is not expected in any way.
HUZZAH FOR GRASS ROOTS SOCIAL ACTIVISM AND RAISING COMMUNITY AWARENESS!
Now to go work off my caffeine high.
