ALTs in the Toyama Newspaper, or "How Rachel toots her own horn."

It's nice to see good things written about what you're doing, especially if it's something into which you're pouring every spare moment.

ALT's Gratitude

In preparation for the opening of the 19th Annual Toyama International Charity Show, ALTs living in Toyama are putting their effort into practicing. On May 17th, 20 participants gathered at the Toyama CiC Building for rehearsal in preparation for their performance of "Alice in Wonderland".

As a means of showing their gratitude to the people of Toyama, volunteers produce the Charity Show, which has become a yearly tradition since 1990. Volunteers put on a play and music performances, the profits from which are donated to foundations within Japan. (Note: Not only charities within Japan, but also outside Japan as well--Heifer International).

Lead actress Ruth Kingdon (age 22) smilingly says, "Toyama is a friendly place with many kind people." Although this is my first performance here, I'm doing my best and I want to show my thanks."

The story is about Alice, a high school student in Toyama, who goes to Tokyo and, through her experiences there, comes to see Toyama from a new perspective. In order for Japanese people to enjoy the show, the majority of the lines are in Japanese.

The show's rehearsals are held under the direction of Rachel Chaffin (age 26). Rachel, in her second year as the show's director, motivates the cast for the performance, saying, "I want people in Toyama to enjoy the show."

The Toyama International Charity Show will be held on June 13th at the Niikawa Bunka Hall in Uozu City and June 20th at WingWing Takaoka in Takaoka City. There will be an afternoon show and an evening show on both days. Tickets will be sold for 1000 yen (adults) and 500 yen (high school students and younger).
