The movie is not about a monster attacking a city. It's about people's reactions to a monster attacking the city. So if you are expecting a monster movie like Godzilla you'll be disappointed.
Or so friends have told me that I trust. I really don't have much interest in it. :/
I think <lj user="murdermystery"> liked itgirlracerJanuary 30 2008, 23:22:15 UTC
I've watched Suspiria like 4x in the past 3 days
I hope it's actually not as great as I think it is and that there are hundreds of better movies that I haven't seen yet. Oh and dude those comix recs were spot-on I am also thrilled that pretty much every book on that list is available in public library here
Cloverfield is completely fucking amazing, but I don't live in New York, and it seems to me that most people who have problems with it are New Yorkers themselves. Kimberly over at Cinebeats loved it as much as me too. And Tim Lucas loved it as much as me at first, but then when he realized other critics were sort of panning it he went back on his word b/c he's kind of obnoxious like that.
I've gotta admit, I'm still a little touchy about seeing my city get destroyed. That said, I love Godzilla movies and I loved seeing my city empty in I Am Legend. Your vote makes me want to see it again.
Would you recommend those reviewers you mentioned?
I've been e-friends with Kimberly (http://cinebeats.blogsome.com) for probably five or six years, and she definitely knows what she's talking about, and does it in a really fun and informative way.
Tim Lucas I'm touch and go with, he's sort of become with quintessential critic/historian in the overarching realm of film that I'm obsessed with (namely, genre film), and he seems to have no qualms about wearing his ego on his sleeve, which I have issues with. Plus sometimes I just blatantly disagree with certain tactics/things he has to say (it sort of really pisses me off how he's totally withdrawn his praise for Cloverfield--coincidentally around the same time tons of people all over the net began panning it). I've interacted with him a few times, and while he does really know his shit (he did write the recently released gigantic Bava tomb), we have inherently different views/tastes in terms of Jess Franco (but to give credit where credit is due, he was one of the first
