SATURDAYThe highlight of the weekend
Audrey, Masala and I were walking to Cinders Gallery for
The Drama magazine's release party. On our way, we heard merengue music pumping from out a basement grate. The basement grate was proped open and was behind a full metal gate. Masala opened the metal gate and peered into the basement. She couldn't see anything. "Come on," she said, "let's check it out!"
Audrey and I stood there, skeptical. "Uh," I said, "are you sure that's ok?" But Masala was already walking down the cement stairs. We followed, a little behind, and I half waited for Masala's gory horror movie demise. Instead, as she disappeared, we heard a bunch of happy male screams which, although in Spanish, were obviously something like, "Hey, Mama! Get in here and dance!"
Masala told us to come down, so we did. We were met with cheers! Downstairs, in the basement, was a little room with a full bar, mirrors and pictures on the wall, a six piece merengue band, and two other people. Two viewers for a six piece band. And us.
An old man had already grabbed Masala and they were dancing up a storm. I grabbed Audrey and we danced and danced - spin, twirl, shuffle, spin, shuffle, dip. For a few songs we danced with abandon. We told them we were late and left. They told us to come back and bring friends.

Back to my place
We went back to the underground Dominican social club, but they were closed. They told us that they play every week and to come back.
Not feeling like a party, we decided to go back to my place, have some wine, and then go out.
