>Anders Ericsson, a psychology professor at Florida State University further devastates our society's belief in the importance of talent and genius.
ah'm down w/ his conclusions, but ah don't think they really "devastate" our society's belief. "Practice makes perfect" and "Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration" are received wisdom in our society, especially outside th arts.--mza.
Chalk it up to hyperbole.uberdionysusMay 25 2006, 19:48:24 UTC
But I'm talking about how people think that everything is talent in the arts. You tell them the Picasso quote, "Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working," or the Edison quote, "Great accomplishments depend not so much on ingenuity as on hard work," they'll just stop and say, "Yeah, but talent is everything! I can't even draw a stick figure!"
I always want to get up in their face and scream, "BULLSHIT!"
hey, troy. this is miguel lostcosmonaut's IRL friend. we met at betchka's b-day party last year. just wanted to say congrats and i really have been digging your posts pertaining to the artistic process. i definitely dig on this article you posted.
i've always been a huge believer that hardwork overcomes "talent."
MZA actually suggested getting a positive reinforcement group for artists and creatives alike. I told him I'd definitely be down.
(i friended you by the way, a while back, i hope you don't mind).
Have I not friended you? Weird. I thought I friended you and Stacy and everyone after the party.
I would totally be down. A group like drawnbyhand but for us, would be pretty great. Invite only - not a rating comm, but a comm for doing stuff and hard core critique.
I have no idea how it would work, but it seems like a good idea. Everyone has to post one finished piece a week or you're out. Or something.
i've actually been trying to discipline myself by taking acapella tracks and making remixes. i had a goal of at least 2-4 remixes a month. i haven't kept up as of late because i've been tied down with other duties, but still music-related.
i guess it could be kind of a support group. and i definitely think turning in something on the reg would keep folks busy, even if it's a draft or just an idea. i think that could work.
we'd probably need to get MZA in on the suggestions.
