Friday Night:
A Failed Surprise Party
We organized a surprise party for Audrey. I got off work and called and she said she was going to get something to eat. I told her I wanted to take a shower and I'd meet her. She said, "You don't have to."
"But I want to."
"Ok."
So I shower and call and no answer. I wander around wondering what's up, and eventually call Arianne, "We have problems. Audrey's not answering her phone and she sounded depressed. I don't know where she is."
But then I stop into the restaurant I know she likes and go into their tranquil garden and she's eating dinner with a friend of mine. I wonder if I'm interrupting her, but she asks me to sit down. "I ran into Jason on the street and I told him it was my birthday so he bought me dinner."
Now I realize I'm going to have to tell Jason that we're just keeping her busy for her surprise, but Audrey is constantly there, and Jason and I are never alone together. Audrey wants to go to the waterfront (or the "Grand Street Water Park as her and Molly call it). "But Arianne wanted to meet for dinner and drinks," I protest. "I think she wanted to meet on your roof top."
"Troy, I've been inside all day and I'm sad and I want to watch the sunset. It's my birthday, you know? I'll just tell her to join us."
"Let's just buy a bottle of wine and set at the waterfront," Jason suggests.
So I call Arianne. "Look," I say, "You better come up with something because I can't come up with anything, and Audrey isn't budging."
Audrey's roommate calls. He tells her that he's locked out and, yeah, he knows it's her birthday, but he needs her to open the door for him. He knows it's shitty, but he has to meet his girlfriend in an hour. She listens and asks why he can't just bike down to the waterfront and pick up her keys? "Shit..." he says, "What was that? We're losing connection..."
And then he calls back and tells her that he, uh, he can't come deliver the keys 'cause he picked up these large cabinets that they were looking at and doesn't feel comfortable leaving them in the hallway. No, not even for a few minutes; they're really expensive, you know?
So Audrey gets off the phone sad. "Shit. I don't want to go back there."
Jason says, "Why don't I bike your keys to your roommate?"
"Uh, why don't we all go together?" I ask.
"No," says Jason, "No, let her stay and watch the sunset and I'll be right back."
And off he goes.
Fuck.
"Audrey, you should really go home."
"No. Look. I was there all day and I just don't want to see it again."
"Ok. Look. ... Fuck. Everyone is over there. It was supposed to be a surprise."
"Oh. Oh. ... Those never work on me." And she tells me about the last surprise party people tried to organize for her in eighth grade. Her mom was chaperoning and she didn't want to go. She refused to go until her friend told her that it was a surprise party.
"Well," she said, "I guess I should go."
"Actually, this is where you want to be. Let's have them come down."
"Do you think that would be ok?"
"Yeah."
So everyone brought the presents and the cake and the candles down to the waterfront.
Surprise!
Zombies!
After everyone left, Audrey and I went to the city. We danced at Trash and ended up at Lit. Audrey wanted to exhuast all of the nights possibilities, but we ended up going home at around 6 or 7. It was a great night.
I've already posted a Chrome song and most of you are already aware of them, but I could probably post great Chrome rarities and b-sides for a month, so fuck it, you know? Anyway, I was going to post the b-side to the single for "New Age," which appeared on Red Exposure (released on the fairly famous label Beggar's Banquet). But the more I listened to the single (called "Informations"), the more I realized I wanted to post the more famous "New Age". It's not as experimental, and it's almost an industrial dance track, but it's damn good.
Ya know what? I'm going to post them both: the a-side and the b-side. Enjoy.
