Ueda tried convincing himself he was dreaming or what he saw was only his hallucination. He blinked and blinked again, hoping that the face of the man who now stared back at him with a weird look was not real, but he wanted to scream out loud as he realized the he was true. They stared for about two minutes or so until the latter broke their staring contest and made his way towards him. Ueda was still in his frozen state. He couldn’t talk, run or die when the latter sat down on the chair in front of him, the same chair that Johnny sat before. Ueda stared at the latter in shock and his sweat kept flowing, moistening his already pale face. He started to think he might’ve succeeded in lying to Johnny but he obviously couldn’t lie to the one who was in front of him now.
Why? Because for the latter, it’s easy to notice that all that Ueda said were just lies. Why was he so confident about it? Oh the answer is so easy because he was…
“Hi, Ueda-kun,” said the leader of one of the more famous groups in Johnny’s Jimusho, NEWS, and he was none other than Yamapi. He smiled bitterly at Ueda and somehow lost his words suddenly.
On the other hand Ueda just continued to be frozen. Pi noticed how bad Ueda’s shock is and he couldn’t help but worry. He then went to the counter to order a bottle of water , paid hurriedly and ran back to Ueda’s table. He opened the bottle and gave it to Ueda’s cold hand.
“Drink it!” commanded Pi.
Ueda tried to unfreeze then drank water in the bottle until he felt the numbness in his body go away. “Th…thanks,” mumbled Ueda and wiped the sweat on his forehead.
Pi nodded in silence and waited until the latter was calm enough. He knew it’s useless to talk to him when he was still in shock, realizing his lie was caught by him. Ueda calmed himself for a moment and prepared himself to face the reality. He has never imagined his lies being caught so fast, especially his lies was caught by Pi, Ryo’s big best friend!
“What are…are you doing here, Yamashita-kun?” asked Ueda after he remembered the way to speak again. His voice was low and a little bit quivering.
“Please call me Yamapi or Pi,” demanded Pi before he answered Ueda’s question. Ueda just nodded and said to Pi to call him Ueda, without -kun too. “At first I was buying food for me and Jin before I got a great idea to take a rest here for a while. I was sipping my cappuccino happily to regain my energy and to try to get away from my sleepiness when I recognized you and Johnny. I was getting curious because it’s strange and I never see you two together so I couldn’t stop myself in following you and hiding behind Johnny. Well, I don’t know why I hid in the first place and I knew I heard the whole conversation, but you have to believe me. I wasn’t intentionally eavesdropping. Please believe me! I swear!” said Pi guiltily and he lifted up his two hands in the air.
“I believe you,” said Ueda though he was the one that had to feel guilty here.
He just didn’t expect Pi to feel sorry about what he heard instead of investigating him.
“Yamapi,” said Ueda.
“Yes?”
“What do you think about what I said to Johnny-san?”
Pi crossed his hand on the table and looked at Ueda’s brown eyes. “You lied,” answered Pi straightforwardly.
Ueda sighed. “I see.”
“Why did you lie like that?” asked Pi confusedly. “I know you and Ryo-chan aren’t lovers, but why did you lie to Johnny as if you’re protecting your real lover? Ryo-chan is your enemy and you are Ryo--chan’s enemy too. I can’t think of any sane answer as to where you got the idea to tell Johnny that you two are lovers. That’s the most horrible thing that I’ve ever heard, you know?”
“I don’t know Yamapi,” said Ueda in frustration. “I really don’t understand why I did that. I hate him so much. Maybe letting him down will be a damn good thing for me, but surprisingly I don’t like it anymore.”
“Why?” asked Pi with a single word but it succeeded to make Ueda feel there was something that hit him right in his face, forcing him to realize the gravity of what he just did.
“I just want to help,” said Ueda honestly. He didn’t have another reason for doing that. It’s just simple for humans to help each other. Ueda played with his sweaty fingers and looked at Pi nervously. “Am I wrong?” asked him.
Pi was a little bit surprised being asked like that. He didn’t know how to answer.
Ueda laughed softly. “It’s funny, right? I lied to Johnny to help the guy that I hate the most. Ahahaha what a silly lie it was,” Ueda couldn’t help but insult himself.
“You’re not wrong, Ueda,” said Pi, comforting Ueda. “You know, I appreciate what you did for Ryo-chan. I admit you are wrong about the lies but at least you did it to save and help Ryo-chan. Honestly, I envy you because you had the courage to do something for him. You are different from me because I am his best friend could only say bullshit about protecting him to everyone but in fact I can’t do anything. What I can only do is make a cowardly decision with the rest of NEWS. I can’t bear seeing their sad and agonized expressions. They are the same as me, not knowing what to do to help him except thinking that the right thing we could do was to let him go without fighting to keep him with us any longer. I realized, our decision will hurt him, but we did it for his sake, for his health and for his life. But when I heard you lie to Johnny to help him so that he doesn’t lose us and Kanjani, I realized we made a big and wrong decision. We should fight for him, not leave him behind. If he fights for us, we have to fight for him too. I wanted to help him, badly, and I will give my best to help you, Ueda. Thank you very much,” said Pi ending his statement with a thankful bow to Ueda.
Ueda gave Pi a warm smile. He started thinking that his lie may not be that bad. Yes, he still hesitated about it but Pi said he would help him so he didn’t have to do it alone. He was happy that Pi was the one who heard his lie. It gave him more courage, spirit and confidence.
“Thank you too Yamapi,” said Ueda, mimicking Pi’s bow and Pi smiled widely. They were smiling like stupid people until suddenly, Ueda was aware of something. His face changed for trouble again. “But how do we do that? I don’t have any ideas anymore,” he said seriously, not having a good idea to start the first step for his lie.
Pi shrugged. They thought of many plans in silence and then Pi got an idea which might become the best way to start this. He was pondering for minutes about it before he told it to Ueda who felt that his head was going to explode because the harder he thought more dizzy his head became. Ueda hated himself because it was now so difficult to find something rational compared to a crazy lie. He almost screamed if Pi hadn’t cut him with his statement.
“I got some ideas,” said Pi finally and again he had a big smile on his face and Ueda found it a bit annoying.
Ueda raised his eyebrows. He didn’t get any ideas but Pi surprisingly got some? Pi might better than him in thinking about this.
“What are they?” asked Ueda, giving up thinking. His brain was already used enough for the lies before.
“I think the first step we could do is make Ryo-chan get out of here because it’s impossible to make him want to heal in the place he hates the most,” said Pi.
“He hates staying here?” asked Ueda.
“Yes, badly,” Pi pouted. “He acts very grumpily when he doesn’t feel comfortable enough in the place so called hospital. He almost makes Jin and I go crazy with his bad behaviour. We’re tired like hell just making him shut up and stay in bed!” Pi sulked for the first time since he started protecting Ryo.
“And what should we do to make him get out of here then?” asked Ueda as he imagined how bad the situation is when Jin and Pi took care of Ryo who was in the bad mood. It’s surely a nightmare!
Pi forgot his sulking when he started spilling out his ideas because Pi never sank into sulking for more than five minutes. “We should make him get well so that the doctor can allow him to go home. We have to persuade him saying that as soon as he gets well, he can go home immediately,” said Pi, getting a nod from Ueda who didn’t know how Pi was going to do that later.
“And…,” Pi was hanging his sentences intentionally.
Ueda confused. “And?”
“And we have a big problem,” answered Pi.
Ueda confused for more. “What?”
Pi sighed. “About where he will stay after he gets out of here.”
“He has his own apartment, right?” asked Ueda.
“Yes, but there’s no way I will leave him alone in his apartment just to find him dead there the other day. I believe he can’t take care of his own health and he’ll do stupid things if we don’t keep an eye on him.”
“How about bringing him to your apartment?” suggested Ueda because what Pi said might be true.
“I can’t because I live in my parent’s house and I have so many reasons to not bring him home with me,” excused Pi.
“Then how about Jin?” suggested Ueda again.
Pi didn’t answer that because even Ueda started to realize it’s impossible for Ryo to stay in the same place with Jin. Kame lives together with Jin so everyone in the world would certainly know what Akame does in their apartment and their lovey-dovey acts would seriously make Ryo pissed off and throw his sharp insults to complain about how they dare screw each other happily in front of a person who was trying to get well. Their faces became gloomy just to imagining how furious Ryo would be when he catches Akame making out and completely forgetting about him. So the result was that Akame’s apartment was out of the list.
Pi rested his chin on his hand as he played with the cap of his bottle and thought where the hell could he take Ryo without getting a bad feeling about leaving him there. He started to think about Shirota Yuu’s apartment, Tegoshi family’s house and Koyama family’s house while Ueda was silent because of his stunned brain. Ueda didn’t know Ryo’s other close friends besides Pi and Jin so he really didn’t have an idea about it. Ueda almost spaced out if he didn’t notice how intense Pi’s look was to him, so he couldn’t help but get back to his senses again and feel bad and suspicious about Pi’s look because it’s not an intense look like between lovers but an intense look like when you wanted something from other people and you only used that look to make people understand what you wanted and make them give it to you.
“What?” asked Ueda, annoyed because he didn’t know what Pi wanted from him.
“I think he can stay with you,” answered Pi because he wasn’t sure his friends could handle Ryo’s bad attitude and his sharp tongue of course. Then it made him think that there was just one person who could do that remembering how Ueda could stand Ryo’s bad behaviour for years, so he finally decided that committing Ryo in Ueda’s hands was a really good choice.
Ueda pointed at himself with his index finger, totally bewildered. “Me?” He asked blankly.
Pi nodded like a child who was being asked whether he wanted to buy ice cream.
Ueda gasped as if Pi just told him he would put in a gorilla in his lovely apartment. “No wayI Why does it have to be my place anyway?” he protested.
“It’s your responsibility because you were the one who started this lie and since you lied about you and Ryo-chan being lovers it’s perfectly well if you are living together. It could make the lie work more easy, I think,” reasoned Pi.
“Easy? I don’t think so!” Ueda had an urge to scream but he restrained himself because it’s a public place. It’s a hospital for god’s sake! But he couldn’t help but feel irritated because meeting Ryo in the Jimusho was more than enough and painful so it’s totally the end of the world if he would see Ryo every day and in the same room with him. It’s surely the worst idea because it’s similar to making the most unbelievable war in this century.
“Please Ueda. I can’t think of any more places where I could rest in peace thinking he will be alright staying. It’s certainly difficult to accomplish the lies if you separate with him and I think the lies are just between you, me, and Ryo. No one else because we don’t know what will happen if the lies spread without us realizing it,” said Pi, so insisting about his ideas.
It took more than ten minutes for Ueda to consider that and he almost made Pi fall asleep on the table, but Pi tried to stay awake by bumping his forehead on the table three times until Ueda sighed and agreed to Pi’s ideas.
“Yay!” Pi said happily in victory, ignoring the pouting Ueda who thought the day couldn’t get any worse. “Okay, I will persuade Ryo-chan to heal himself as soon as possible so that he can go out of here and stay in the most comfortable place in the world which he will regret if he refuses!” said Pi excitedly.
Ueda thought Pi was too exaggerated by saying that his apartment was so good like that because he could just smiled bitterly as he remembered how boring his apartment is. But well, let Pi be because it’s the first time he knew Pi could be so persistent when he was in his ‘insist’ state and something that made Ueda confused more was that why was Pi more eager to do these lies than him? Pi even became the one who planned about what they would do later. Well, it’s not bad since Ueda couldn’t force his already corrupted brain to think for more stupid lies and it might be that Pi’s used to act and think as a leader so he was unconsciously doing that.
“You know what, Pi? I am really grateful about your willingness to help me and I never expected you and Jin will work together with me to accomplish this lies,” said Ueda, truly feeling grateful.
Pi raised one of his eyebrows. “Oh, it’s no problem but who said I will drag that Baka to this lie too?”
Ueda surprised. “You don’t want to involve him?”
“Ouch, of course I don’t because he’s the biggest Baka in our planet who can’t shut up his mouth to spit out all secrets of people even about his own sex life with Kame so everybody can hear that. He has a really strange habit which he always can’t stand telling everybody about a big or interesting secret just to make thrilling events,” said Pi, crossing his arms to make an X symbol in front his proud chest to emphasize every word.
“But how can you not talk to him about this? How can we lie to him? You are always together, right? Besides that, what will happen if he knew his best friends are hiding something and telling lies under his nose??” asked Ueda warily. Jin might be the biggest Baka in the world but he was so scary when he realized he was being betrayed by other people and the possibility that he could become scarier is that in this case he was being betrayed by his lovely best friends, so Ueda couldn’t help but worry about it.
“It’s okay Ueda. I will explain to him about this in the right time, not now, and I think he will help us without even noticing it anymore,” Pi tried to assure him.
“But…”
“Keep that ‘but’ because we have another important thing to do. Let me try making Ryo-chan get out of here and you could please just prepare your apartment, for example tidy it up as clean as you can because Ryo-chan will complain if he feels your place isn’t comfortable at all and it will him to step out there without even caring to come in just to take a look. I will inform you when the doctor announces about Ryo-chan’s return, nee,” said Pi and Ueda could just nod. They exchanged their phone numbers and made sure nobody knew they would contact each other about Ryo by saving the other’s number under different or stupid names
Pi was grinning widely since all that he said was accepted by the older and surprisingly Ueda didn’t let out any objection or complaint. Pi stretched his hand, feeling more relaxed as slowly his burden about his and the rest of NEWS’s decision faded away and he was more than willing to do this lies and he felt so happy he was the one who became the witness to this.
“Ano…Pi, is there anything that we will have to talk about?” asked Ueda, looking at his watch from time to time.
“Uh? No. Why?” asked Pi too.
“Hm … because I have boxing practice that will start in less than an hour.”
“Eh?” Pi looked at his watch and gasped. “Yabai! It’s more than one hour since I went to buy food! I have to come back to Ryo-chan’s room or I will see a fat body lying on the floor because of starvation!” said Pi, panicked. He grabbed his plastic of food on the previous table and pulled Ueda’s hand to drag him out of the cafeteria.
“What the-? Why are you dragging me, Yamapi?” asked Ueda because Pi was dangerously dragging him with none of so called gentleness.
“Sorry Ueda, I forgot about Jin. Besides, you wanna meet him to give him his schedule, don’t you?” said Pi, not even slowing his pace.
Ueda nodded and let himself be dragged by Pi. They arrived in front of Ryo’s room minutes later and he yanked his hand from Pi’s grip right before Pi opened the door. Pi was clearly dumbstruck because of Ueda’s sudden act. Ueda lied at Pi quickly pretending he just realized he left his cell phone in the cafeteria so he had to come back to take it before he lost it. Pi was still in his dumb stricken position when Ueda shoved Jin’s schedule at him and asked or rather insisted that Pi would give it to Jin and then he was lost from Pi’s in a second.
