[CWS Calendar 2013] Day 24 - One-Syllable Word Story

Jul 24, 2013 22:49

Task: Write a story of maximum 100 words using only one-syllable words.

This exercise forces writers to use simple, familiar words. For example, basic words such as bed, earth, stars, bone, yard, house are all simple words, but they're also rich with emotional potential (If you have to, you may use more-syllable words, but try to keep their amount as limited as possible!).

On the coast, near by the sea, there stood a hut. In it lived an old man. His name was Tom Flocks. He had lived there all his life and he would stay for years to come. At least, this was what Chris thought, when he rode his bike past the hut. Tom Flocks was weird, a weird old man. Just that. The kids from the town played tricks on him. They would knock on his door deep in the night. Or they would sneak up to scream and scare him when he worked. Tom Flocks sew nets. That is all he did. Day by day. Nets. Chris could not get why he would do that and not a more cool job. It was just nets, for God's sake! But Tom Flocks was filled with joy as he moved the needle. He told Chris dad this, a long time ago. Chris thought on this, but could not get it. He did not stop, as he passed the hut and the old man who sew a new net in his yard.
