Grandma's 80th Birthday Dinner

Nov 08, 2009 11:55

My Grandmother turned 80 years old on Friday, and so on Saturday the family took her up to Greek Town for dinner. We went to our favorite spot up there, Greek Islands. My mom and dad, my sister Megan and brother-in-law Nate, the kids, and me. Poor Jason had to work (as is normal around here).

The kids were so well behaved, I was blown away. The restaurant was packed solid. Wait staff bustling hither and yon, setting saginaki alight everywhere you looked, and my kids didn't freak at all. They were wonderful.

At one point, Miriam climbed up into my lap and reached onto my bread plate for my skordalia (a dip made from mashed garlic with enough potato to hold it together). I (stupidly) said "You won't like that". She proved me wrong by eating it by the handful! I'm surprised she didn't have a stomach ache later, but the kid was happy.

Miriam and Asher split a small portion of gyros, Asher eating only the meat (torn into tiny pieces) and some bread; Miriam eating her gyro meat, tzatziki sauce, part of my calamari, part of Megan's potatoes and pastichio, saganaki, bread, butter, and 3 slices of lemon.

Asher was the smart one though, because when dessert came around, while Miriam could only manage to steal a few small bites of mom's cream custard, Asher managed to snag 90% of Uncle Nate's.

Mommy was smart, and didn't let either kid into her lap for dessert.

I brought home what was left of their gyros (not much) and they will enjoy it for lunch tomorrow.

We won't even talk about how much food I ate. Ugh.

Everyone had a great time, Grandma got to hold Asher for the first time (she injured her arm shortly before he was born and couldn't hold anything over 5 lbs for months), and again, I'm so impressed with my little monkeys!
