Took our Seroquel by accident this morning (i.e, picked the wrong side of the med box). It's the first time in two and a half years, so I guess I can be grateful for that much ( Read more... )

You know, I'm not sure I can. The best answer I have is fear. People are generally afraid of change. They're afraid that they'll end up paying much higher taxes in order to cover the cost of health care for other people when it's already hard enough to pay for their own health care. In a lot of Southern states, we already live so close to the poverty level that additional taxes would put us in a really bad position. Some people are afraid that the government will be making decisions about our health care instead of the physicians who treat us, the physicians we trust.

I can't explain this health plan, either, and that terrifies me a little. Maybe a lot.

I don't think this is the right way to go at things. Our current healthcare is... scary and complicated, but I don't think that making sweeping changes without trying smaller ones is the place to start. I think we need community health centers via public health staffed with nurse practitioners to deal with things like the common cold and hypertension. I think if we had one of those in every rural county, then we'd have better health outcomes AND it would cost less in the long run than whatever change is coming. I could be totally wrong about that. But I think it would help.

And... yeah. I really don't have any good answers. I think mostly that people are afraid of change. This is... a really big change. It makes people think that the U.S. is leaning more towards socialism than capitalism, in some ways, and people resent that, too. But... yeah. No good answer here, hon. =(
