Iowa's Supreme Court released an interesting decision this morning.
In a unanimous decision, the Iowa Supreme Court today held that the Iowa statute limiting civil marriage to a union between a man and a woman violates the equal protection clause of the Iowa Constitution.
(
Summary of Varnum v Brien opinion, Iowa Supreme Court)
Because the challenge was made to marriage as a union between a man and a woman rather than a challenge to the validity of a same-sex marriage, this decision clears the way for not just gay marriage but also polygamy and potentially bigamy.
Iowa civil law ought to be pretty entertaining for the next few years.
