...the JFK assassination and being real peeved that the coverage pre-empted my Saturday morning cartoons.
...the Civil Defense signs with the three triangles on some buildings at ECU, designating them as fallout shelters. I had no idea what "fallout" was, but it sure sounded bad. Until very recently there were still Civil Defense supplies stashed in the basement of several dorms at ECU.
...the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show.
...hearing about this unique new species of human called "hippies" that were supposedly taking over the West Coast and posed some kind of terrible threat to the American Way Of Life or some such. I thought they looked like they were having a good time.
...the night Martin Luther King was assassinated. My parents were at a PTA meeting and our babysitter was an elderly black lady who lived in the neighborhood at the time. It wasn't until many years later that I comprehended why the news upset her so.
...the day Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated. I began to wonder why every nutcase in the country seemed to be gunning for the Kennedys. 1968 was a hell of a year.
...the Apollo 11 moon landing. The whole family watched it on our old black & white set in total silence because we knew we were viewing a historic moment. I hope we go back there one day.
...my first major-name rock concert: Iron Butterfly, Minges Coliseum, in Greenville. Nobody told me they would be that damn LOUD. Minges Coliseum was all steel and concrete back then. My sixth-grade ears rang for days afterwards.
