Afternoon Nap

Afternoon Nap, originally uploaded by lisbokt.
I shot this while hanging out in NYC's Battery Park City on my visit with my pal Lisa.

This was an exercise in patience and plotting. All day I had been seeing bicycles, which for inexplicable reasons are a subject I like to shoot. I kept photographing them, but at no point was it "the one I wanted". A bicycle here, a bicycle there- but boring! None of them were good (at least I think, I can usually guess when a film image is good before developing it). And then, exhausted and sun-spent, I hung out in the shade by the marina for an hour or two. There was this Russian girl also hanging out under the same big tree, she was eating her lunch and chatting on her phone for a while. She kept noticing me and my camera and any time I would point it her way (even if it wasn't even pointed at her, she'd grimace and put her hand up. The sun moved, our shady spot moved, so we moved too. She kind of half-moved the bicycle and it fell into this heap here. Yes! Fantastic! I got one shot of it and she noticed (thinking I was shooting her photo, perhaps?) and said some rather not-polite things to me in Russian.I said something polite back to her. "велосипед?!" she said back to me. I'm not sure she believed what I said. :-)
