So to update...
My first solo-pub experiance went great!
I ended up going to the Brass Monkey, a pub just around the corner from my flat, where I've had good experiances in the past (first with a man named Mark and then one named Victor...but "finding a man" wasn't my motivation for going here.. it's a pretty small place with lots of friendly people so I figured it would be a good/safe place to go). It was a bit crowded, but I was able to order myself a half pint and get a seat with no trouble. I would have been happy just sitting there slipping my drink and people watching....but I'm also aware that that can look a bit creepy so I brought a book with me: Irvine Welch's (author of Trainspotting) The Acid House, appropriate thing to read in a pub in Scotland.
I thought it would be really awkward, but it really wasn't that bad. Yes, there were a few time that I felt out place, but no one bothered me I think that my feeling out of place had more to do with me being self-conscious then anything else.
I was enjoying myself so much, in fact, that I ordered a second half pint and would have ordered a third, but desided to head home instead.
So, to conclude, my experiment was a great success! In the past, I've always been afriad to do things at night by myself either because I thought it would be awkward or I was just too scared to go alone. In particular, the number of really awesome concerts I've missed because I didn't have anyone to go with is way too high. As silly as it may sound, I feel like that doesn't have to be the case anymore. If there's some place I really want to go and if no one wants to join me that shouldn't stop me! It's pretty liberating to know that not only can I do things alone and have a good time, but that I have and will continue to do so.
I think I might try going to the Black Bull tonight. It's another pub pretty close to me that I've had good experances with except that it's much bigger, I'll probably get to have a table to sit at by myself, there's this really cute bartender there who sings whatever song the jukebox is playing to himself and does little dances, and they serve real food (In my head this means there will be less people trying to get drunk, and more just out for a few drinks). I think I'll go abit earlier tonight and just stay for a pint.
