We played a show in the suburbs of Detroit on Friday and it was kind of a disaster. We were pretty much left to our own devices in terms of sound and the setup was so shitty that Marie-Claire kept on getting electrocuted by the microphone. It was my first time using my pedal board and it had been set up incorrectly and there was a broken cable somewhere in the mix so it took forever to get my keyboards working. Once we started playing, nobody could hear anything on stage. I couldn't hear my vocals so I'm pretty sure I hit a lot of interesting notes. Then in the middle of one song the smoke in the room started making my eyes water uncontrollably but I was playing with both hands so I had to choose between stopping playing with one hand to wipe my eyes or just finishing the song with tears streaming down my face. I felt like Hugh Jackman deciding whether to pee his pants on stage during Beauty and the Beast. So anyway, I chose to suffer for my art and I'm sure I looked hilarious/insane. After we finished playing, a bunch of trashed people kept coming to talk to us. This one dude tried to make out with Marie-Claire and then me. When I shut him down he pretended he was joking and then rubbed his face against my face. It was awkward.
Despite the show being bizarre and frustrating, it was actually a really fun weekend, though! Especially since when I came home I found that the new Bill Callahan album had come in the mail even though it doesn't come out until next week. It's like, super super good and you should all get it.
