So, I just got home, and I had mail. Yay mail, thought me. Yeah, no. Few days ago, I signed a petition and did one of those auto email sending things, for marriage equality. One of my bits of mail was a response!
From Scott Ryan, who is apparently the Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business and Fair Competition, and also a liberal* senator for Victoria.
He says, and I quote:
"
In 2004, the Coalition amended the Marriage Act 1961 to define in legislation the common understanding in our community of marriage - "the union of man and a woman, to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life".
This definition does not, in any way, seek to prevent of discourage people from entering into same sex relationships, nor does it judge one form of relation to another. It simply recognises marriage as one of the bedrock institutions of society."
To which I would like to say: • No.
• Fuck you.
• No really, no, what the fuck.
• Did you fail basic logic? (Did you even take basic logic?) You can't just say something means something, when the evidence is, in fact, against it.
By which I mean you can't say not allowing same sex marriage isn't judging relations, because it is, it's saying 'you're not allowed to get married, you don't count as a real couple'. And, you know, when you say marriage is "
one of the bedrock institutions of society", that's really fucking bigoted. That's saying non-straight couples aren't allowed to be part of that bedrock, in the same way straight couples can.
Like I said, did you fail basic logic?
• Also poly relationships! They are things that are real, too! It would be nice if you'd just let grown adults decide who and what their relationships are, you fucks.
• Further, fuck you.
• Also why did you actually send me a paper letter? Seriously, what the fuck, all the other responses have been emails, why are you wasting paper, and the post office's time?
• In conclusion, this guy seems to be speaking for the Liberal party as a whole, and he's standing up for bigotry, not that this is a surprise. If Scott Ryan is ever on your ballot paper, I'd suggest putting him right down the bottom would be a really good idea.
* For you non-Australians: our two major parties are Liberal and Labour. Liberal are the more right-wing of the two. Yes, I know.
