SO MANY THINGS, you would not even believe it. Or maybe you would. I was seriously twitching all the way through the FM - THERE'S SUBTITLES. WHICH ARE ACCURATE TO THE ORIGINAL JAPANESE. THEY ARE NOT SAYING ANYTHING LIKE WHAT THE SUBTITLES ARE SAYING. *twitch* *twitch*

Probably the thing that fills me with most rage? Right at the start, where Aqua's laughing at Ven and Terra? In the Japanese she says they "seem like brothers". In the English they'd "make the weirdest brothers".
THAT IS COMPLETELY OPPOSITE SUBTEXT, YOU MORONS. Seriously! What the hell!

And right at the end of the Last Episode? She says "We're connected". Connections between people being, you know. The central theme of the game. They translated that as "There's always a way." >__< No! I mean, yeah, she's totally planning on kicking ass and taking names, BUT. That's not what she says. And - yeah. I could go on, but I think you probably get the picture.

ahhhh, I see, I see. that happens with anime sometimes, I'll be listening to the dub with the directly translated subtitles on and it's like...were they even watching the same show as me. (I think in Fullmetal Alchemist there's a moment where the sub says "no" but the speaker says "yes" and my friends and I were like wtf happened there. xD)

But yeah, I always wonder how translators make decisions about how to rewrite things, especially when they're...kind of wrong.

Yes and no can be kind of difficult, actually! I mean, English is a bit weird about it. If you say "They didn't, did they?" and you answer "No" it usually mean "Yes, you're right, they didn't." Whereas in Japanese if you say "No" it means "No, you're wrong, they did". So if they did you have to say "Yes" which is, yeah. The opposite word.

BUT YEAH sometimes I just don't know. Or change things that they have no real reason to change! I mean, the keyblade from Cinderella's world? Crystal Works, but they changed it to Stroke of Midnight, which. What? Why? Sure, Crystal Works doesn't exactly mean anything, but... it's a keyblade. It doesn't have to.
Or, you know, Aqua's first command style? Magic Wish -> Spellweaver. I'd get it if they changed it to Magical Wish, because that's better English - like how they changed Fire Blazer to Firestorm - but...

Huh, I don't even remember what the yes/no was in response to, but that could very well be plausible. I was only really listening to it in the background while my friends watched and I caught that part at the last second, so. xD

I dunno, maybe they just try to make everything sound cooler. Or at least what they think is cooler. Like, Stroke of Midnight sounds cooler than Crystal Works and still makes sense in Cinderella-land/could be a pun, but who knows. Magic Wish to Spellweaver is harder to justify though. THEY PROBABLY JUST MAKE SHIT UP AND RUN WITH IT.

Japanese also uses negatives a lot more than English - you think so, don't you?, it's not that she didn't do it, etc - than English does, to the extent that sometimes it's just more appropriate to translate things, particularly double negatives and things like won't you/shan't we/etc questions, as positives. It's not that we can't do them in English - and I've obviously got used to them quite a bit - but they're not anywhere near as normal in English, so particularly if you're going for a certain tone/accent/dialect/etc they're not always appropriate. (Like, say, a low-class thug-type in English would probably never say something like 'Won't you...'.)

Yeah, I mean, I see what they did there, with Crystal Works? But at the same time, it's not their brainchild, they're just there to translate, and I really think they've gotta respect both the creators and their audience enough to not meddle.
I AM ALMOST CERTAIN THEY DO, I mean what the fuuuck. I still can't get over Rainfall -> Rainfell. In what universe does that make ANY KIND OF

I tell people historical things they don't want to hear all the time, lmao. eg. I told my roommate the kind of stuff American soldiers ate during the Civil War while she was trying to eat dinner, and she really didn't like me at that moment. xD

SOLUTION: GO INTO TRANSLATING GAMES! THEN YOU CAN MAKE SURE IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN.
Though you clearly don't have the creative mind for making up silly words to replace perfectly good words, it seems.
