Film Analysis - "LUMP OF SUGAR" (Korean Film)

Nov 13, 2011 11:09

The Korean movie "Lump of Sugar" has a very unique plot that centers around the friendship of a girl and a horse. The girl, Si Eun, was there when the horse was born. She named the horse Thunder (Cheondoong). The early months of Thunder was spent with Si Eun caring for him, until Si Eun's father sold Thunder. Si Eun ran away because of that and she did her best to become a jockey.

The movie has many events wherein they can be compared to society nowadays. Si Eun's first trainer was very cruel to the horses under his care, and we can compare his attitude to the way people ignore needy animals on the streets or even hurt them. This trainer also uses low methods to get what he wants, like bribing others others or cheating. People are like this most of the time because they are selfish and they only think of themselves and not for others. Opposite of this trainer, Si Eun and her second trainer are better people. Si Eun has a strong determination to achieve her goals, which is like the younger people in our society who strive to achieve what they wish for in life. The way Koreans bow to their elders or superiors show their way of respect, and respect is what is needed lately.

When Thunder saw SI Eun once again after 2 years, it shows how strong their friendship is because they felt a connection spark. The way Thunder raced until the end, suffering and trying to fight his sickness, shows how much he would sacrifice for Si Eun. The ending, where Thunder finishes first place but dies later on, had a very strong impact to the movie. The emotion and message it relayed should be known to society, that friendship is always worth the sacrifices we make.

The way this movie was presented was very eye-catching. The background music captures the moods perfectly, although in some parts of the film the lighting was kind of dark that it is hard to make out the characters. The set was also very nice since it was the key in making the movie into a very realistic situation, especially the stables, racetracks and countryside. This movie is a movie that I would love to recommend to people for the values shown are presented very clearly and that the plot makes you keep watching without feeling bored.
