Who: Tyr tyr_mcdohl & Toma toma_to
Where: Fountain
When: September 20th, IS 481 - Daytime ( b-before Faylen punched Toma)
What: Stepping up to the challenge (i.e. Zing by Toma and ego bruising for Tyr.)
Warning: Backdating and sharp live blade wielding. Don't do that at home, kids.

As promised--or not really since there hadn't been any such words in his speech at the time--Tyr found himself waiting at the castle fountain with newly acquired whittling tools and material, a smile on his lips.

It was ridiculous of him to behave in such a manner, throwing a challenge at a young boy who probably didn't know better, but it wasn't as if the Tenkai had dealt with younger kids on a regular basis since the last war. Having a brat three to four times younger than him insult his artistic abilities was rather damaging for his ego, especially when the Tenkai didn't tend to spend much time observing ships so much as travel on them.

Toma stepped outside of the castle and jogged up to the fountain to meet with his newest rival. Sure, the truth was he didn't know the first thing about carving wooden boats, but how hard could it be? He certainly couldn't do any worse than what Tyr was capable of!

He approached the man with a sorry looking potato peeler in hand and an unfriendly gaze shaded by his favored hat, and not much to say.

Unluckily for Toma, Tyr was perhaps just as unfriendly right now despite his smile. On top of having his pride stung the previous day, he hadn't retrieved his bandanna yet from a certain thief which made him unusually jittery. Not the best combination for dealing with other individuals, but Tyr had worse before.

Looking down at the kid who arrived on time, the youthful man couldn't help raising a brow at the potato peeler. Honestly, he hadn't expected the kid to acquire any sort of tool for whittling or to be given one.

'Wonder where he got it from...' he thought even as he said, "Well, I didn't expect that."

Following Tyr's eyes to his own grip on the peeler he replied matter-of-factly, "I'm not about to use my practice weapons on something stupid like this." Toma propped himself up on the ledge of the fountain, his frown never faltering. "Did you bring wood? I won't trust you unless we're using the same kind...!" Really this was just an excuse; Toma wasn't sure what kind of material he would need to carve a boat...

"Honestly." Snorting, the Tenkai simply took one of the two pocket knives that rested on the fountain ledge, handing it sheated to the boy with serious eyes. "Unless you want to hurt yourself with that dull an edge, you better take this." Almost as an afterthought. "And keep it."

"..." Toma takes the pocket knife into his hands. At first grateful for the tool, but that feeling is quickly replaced by pride too large for his own good. "I don't need your help!" He smacks the blade back onto the ledge before continuing. "I can do this on my own!!" A slight pause and look of surprise for his own outburst washes over the boy's flushed face. He probably wasn't all that upset over the actual pocket knife itself.

He quiets his voice and looks away from the older man "I mean....I can just use this thing..."

At least the boy was typically prideful enough to react as he'd expected. Of course, he hadn't been certain Toma would've quieted down afterwards, thought he might have left in a huff, but this was good.

He could deal with this kind of brat.

"Don't be ridiculous," Tyr firmly scolded the kid as he handed the knife to him again, forcefully this time. "You'll hurt yourself worse with that thing than if you were using this knife." And for good measure, he added with a smirk, "Plus, it wouldn't be fair if I got a boat better carved than yours just because I have a sharper tool."

At a loss for words as the better blade is force upon him, Toma's eyes wander frantically until he regains himself and a more playful tone emerges. "I've SEEN your boats. It's gonna take more than a sharp tool."

Tyr's smile stayed firm even in the face of adversity.

"I guess you'll just have to prove it to me then," he retorted as he gave Toma a sufficiently large piece of wood.

Toma takes the wood and stares at it hard, half-expecting the thing to speak to him and tell him where to begin. "Y-Yeah, whatever. You'll see...!" He brings the blade to the wood but takes no action. "Uh...."

"I'm sure I will."

T'was very difficult not to burst out laughing at the expression Toma was sporting, but Tyr bravely withstood the urge, taking the other piece of wood for himself as he sat on the ground and made himself comfortable against the fountain. Hopefully, he wouldn't be staining his bandages with bright red today.

"So what'd you do with that boat?" He asked without looking at the brat, carefully starting to whittle, slow enough for anyone watching to pick up on his technique.

Trying to observe Tyr from the corner of his eye without looking too obvious, he begins to mimic him, quickly getting an idea of what the first step is. Once comfortable with his carving motion, Toma answers the hero's question. "The boat? Uh... I sank it, obviously! That's the only thing it's good at!" He answered the question, but not exactly truthfully...Like he was about to admit he, a thirteen year old, was playing with the boat in the baths to take his mind off of things!

An 'annoyed' look settled on the youth's face, though the smile was still there. Pausing in the cutting motion to look at the brat, Tyr spoke 'kindly'.

"Do you know how long it took to get that boat done?"

"Too long?" The 'brat' quickly retorted, never looking up from his carving.

Twitch. "I had to look at boats all day to get the right shape."

As in the 'deck' hadn't been terribly straight in the first place. He wouldn't speak of the rest of the boat for which people had to provide him with advice.

"Really? All day? " He questioned, looking up while still shaving away at the wood. "'Cause I've been on a lot of boats and yours doesn't look like anything I'VE seen..."

He knew that it wasn't a perfect boat given that it wouldn't float, but to say that it didn't look like any boat the kid'd have seen...

"You're probably blind, aren't you, kid?" Tyr threw back since he had based himself off the ships at the docks.

"B-Blind?!" The boy sputtered. All his attention shifted from his work to Tyr's retort, Toma's blade slips and cuts into his other hand. "AH!" He let out a yell as he dropped his project to the ground to nurse his hand.

Alerted by the sound of blade against flesh rather than the rougher blade against wood scrapping, the older male looked up and cursed audibly as he took in the rather deep cut the kid had. Taking out a handkerchief that he'd started to carry on his person since his first cut, Tyr firmly took the bleeding hand and pressed the handkerchief against the wound.

"Calm down, Toma," he ordered despite how foreign the name was to his mind.

Toma watched placidly as the man quickly took control of the situation. At first thankful, but he couldn't help but feel as if he was being patronized for his young age. No matter how much the cut was starting to sting, it's not as if he's never been injured before! "I-I am calm!" He snapped his wounded hand away and began to apply his own pressure. "Do you think I'm gonna cry or something?! I'm not some...baby!" His sharp glare returned as he clung to his palm.

Briefly taken aback by the snapping, the man quickly regained his calm, though he did look impressed.

"Well, it's good to see you've got spunk," Tyr commended, "but next time, pay attention to what you're doing and keep your blade away from you if you're going to react to anything."

His lecture was so basic, of course he had heard it all before. So why did he slip up now? "I KNOW that! I'm a Queen's Kni--" He stopped himself, softening his tone. "I mean...That's so obvious. I don't know why I..." Toma attempted to hide his face under the shade of his hat, still nursing his hand.

Admittedly, it was confusing and curious that the boy stopped his tirade midway. Miss Lyon was exactly that and she didn't seem to find any shame in calling herself one.

First though, they needed to get the kid to the infirmary to get that cut bandaged.

"Is there something wrong about being a Queen's Knight?" the Tenkai asked of Toma to keep the boy's mind off his injury as he put their things away. ...And damn, the kid's boat was already looking better than his, the man thought with a twitch.

Letting Tyr do all the pick-up work, the boy from Lordlake looked off into another direction as if uninterested and scoffed, "I guess that depends on who the Knight is. But what do I care..." Toma brought his gray gaze back to Tyr as he hopped off of the fountain ledge and onto his feet. "...It's not like I'M a Knight."

Skeptical amber met disinterested gray head on. The Toran man didn't know what was up with that attitude, but he'd been certain the boy had been walking around proudly in regal clothing. ...An apprentice, if he recalled the few things Miss Lyon and he spoke of months ago.

Was he just impatient then or was there an undercurrent Tyr was missing?

"I guess not," he agreed readily before going on. "Though, an apprentice eventually becomes a knight."

Toma could feel his face heating up, maybe it was just a reaction to his cut? Whatever the case, he knew this wasn't a topic he was comfortable speaking about. "C-Can we just forget it?! I need to get this thing fixed." Waves a bloody hand for Tyr to see.

That most certainly was a diversion tactic, but since it wasn't his business to pry into in the first place, the Tenkai went along with it.

"Alright," he replied, keeping a hold on the sheated knives and their individual creations-in-progress. "I guess we'll have to wait till that's healed up before seeing whose boat is better." But the Tenkai would have to practice a lot if a brat's first attempt was already looking better than his own.

Relieved over Tyr's decision to end his questions, the boy eased up in his attitude and started his way to the infirmary. But not before looking up at the taller man and giving a cheeky grin. "Yeah, I guess you got off lucky today~"
