Cynicism Day

I love fairy tales. Seriously, The Tale is the ultimate module to study. This week we've been studying the Grimms Brothers's and also Bettelheim's interpretation in Uses of Enchantment. I completely geeked out, the Grimms fairy tales were the stories I grew up reading - that and Hans Christian Anderson - non of your disney rubbish please.

I've been reading quite a bit reccently (its been nice, having finished my essay on Perrault to relax a lot this week, ignoring the fact that I have another essay due on the 22nd) and I've read Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go which is a really interesting read. Whilst the dystopia he creates seems almost science fiction, science seems to remain almost insignificent in plot as he conjures far more importance on the idea of relationships and emotions. Furthermore all knowledge about his world, and of the children born as clones, is passed to us gradually through the narrator Kath as she in turn experiences the knowledge.

I also borrowed Terry Pratchett's Making Money from Emma, which was as always with Pratchett very amusing. Moist von Lipwig is an awesome character, and I'd wager that the next novel we see him in would be something along the lines of Taking Money. It still really upsets me to think that Terry Pratchett is suffering with alzheisers, such genius. =(

The rocksoc has its Valentine's Burlesque Evening tonight, which should be fun despite the whole valentine's thing. And I'm DJing again, mainly because half of the DJs are otherwise preoccupied with valentine's like activities.

And then tomorrow I am going home for the weekend to do laundry, eat real food, watch real television and see Caroline! Its going to be weird, going home and Ashley not being there, I miss her. =(

djing, fairy tales, books, rocksoc
