I was expecting a short and saccharine anniversary roll in the sheets and sweet talk, this has this and so much more. It is beautiful and it aches, the trip is perfect - I can so see Henry doing something like that...and how it would be an awful trip for Abraham.

For Henry, Abraham was the one who gave his life purpose again, so he was proud of Abraham, all the monuments, the trip was really for Henry...he'll like Abraham to bask in how he's worshipped, but that's not Abraham.

For Abraham, who grew up tall fast and had to shoulder weight young, Henry was the first Abraham could lean on and relied on. Henry devoted his time to Abraham, Henry spoiled Abraham and let him be young, Henry rescues Abraham so that with Henry, Abraham didn't have to be strong all the time. Abraham cried in Henry's arms when Ann died...

Abraham doesn't need or want Henry to remind him how much of the country looked up to and relied on Abraham to be strong and saintly and mighty! That is like dude, the opposite of what Abraham needed from Henry.

Yes! I really feel there's this huge discrepancy in their relationship... where they genuinely care for each other so much, but neither are very good at really being what the other needs, or even understanding what those needs really are. Especially for Henry, who can be just thoughtless and selfish enough in sensitive situations. There's just a real disconnect between them, no matter how much time they spend together, and how nice that time is... Henry will always expect Abe to be glad for this second chance of life, and happy to live it, but Abe never will. And Henry will never really understand that. And meanwhile, Abe is so much a man from "the most humble walks of life" and also is so prone to depression and miseries, that he can't see Henry's viewpoint. They both work from the best of intentions, but it will never work out...

I think a lot about F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, who very literally destroyed each other, despite being utterly in love with each other.

I'm vaguely working on a part 2 to this, which would address some of those questions... so we'll see if I ever finish and post it! Hopefully. And hopefully sooner rather than later... ;)
