((I've made a little thing, the first part of a project I'm futzing around with. So without further ado, I give you Chrono Trigger Tarot, part one.))
Making an icon for a friend recently, and the conversation that followed, put the idea in my head to do a Tarot set based on the landmark SNES game Chrono Trigger. Since the icon was of Lucca, I thought I'd start with her.
Lucca makes an excellent figure for the Magician. Starting the game with a broad scientific background and a prediliction for building and experimenting, Lucca's initiative and exploration of her potential continues unabated once her magical potential is unlocked. Nor does exploring her magical potential cause her to leave science behind. Rather, she combines the two, becoming a master of many disciplines, the quintessential Magician.
This was an interesting and challenging piece to work on, setting a new record for me in time spent and layers used. I also learned the use of several tools in Paint Shop that I hadn't taken the time to learn about before now; I guess the spirit of the card was nudging me toward using my potential.
The table, in fact, posed a couple of interesting challenges, but I wanted to pull it off. One of the recurring symbols of the Magician in Tarot is the symbols of the Minor Arcana, the four suits, laid out like tools. On Lucca's table, the Masamune stands in for the suit of Swords, the Gate Key for the suit of Wands, the beaker for the suit of Cups, and Magus' ritual circle for the suit of Pentacles.
Sprites culled from Chrono Trigger, Lucca taken from promotional art for either the game or the anime, background pilfered from the Internet after a Google image search for "gears."
