this is actually the prague castle cathedral... but had to include it before moving into the rest of the berlin photos, and finally the end of our trip. The most beautiful building i've seen in the whole world.
back to berlin... recognize this? yeah, the building mj dangled the baby from... and also the most expensive hotel in all of europe... doesn't look extravegant from the outside because nothing in this centre square of berlin is supposed to over-shaddow...
the bredanberg gates with with the four-horse chariot on top (that neopolian stole at one point, but has since been returned to berlin)
ok, ok, how about some night life! here we go...
the Wild AT Heart bar, that was uncannily similiar to the Santa Cruz Asti, old school american punk music and everything. the bar-tenders all were really cool, lots of piercings and tatts, and talkative (in english)
and we went on a pub crawl, and met some really awesome people. Adam from missouri, but living in austin texas (i swear he's NOT a douche-bag!) and this girl (we never caught her name!) from Brazil.
these guys, Gael, and Adam, were from Switzerland and Sydney Austrailia respectively, and REALLY super awesome. Adam told J and I that we danced like true berliners! woo-hoo! complement city!
this was in the ladie's room at one of the bars, and i thought it was worthy of a photo! berlin RULES!
after our night, we head back to our hostel via the berlin U bahn, and it feels totally safe. i would even feel safe if i was a by myself coming home late at night. i noticed many women on the train with us, by themselves, and it was close to 3-4am... I LOVE BERLIN!
the city is also phenominal as far as monuments goes. there is a lot of history for it to live up to, and the whole approach to the city's past is artistically, sentimentally, and inspirationally flawless, and incredibly moving. This here is a war monument, the sculpture is of a woman holding a son, based around a woman in real life who not only lost lost a son in the first world war, but also lost grandchildren in the second. Above her the building is open to let snow, rain, and sun fall upon the statue as the seasons change. the snow makes the monument look as though she is holding the boy and keeping their bodies warm, the rain drips down her cheeks like tears, and the sun shines down onto them like a halo of light, and it looks as though she is holding his body up to be sent up to the heavens. truly my favourite monument. there are also ashes of both a jewish prisoner, and a german soilder that died in the war on either side of the statue buried below. to symbolize the hardships of both sides, and the common coming together of germans, and all people as a whole.
unfortunately it is time to head out from berlin, and into holland to end our 2-week mini-euro tour. jason is the cutest when he sleeps! haha! he'll hate this pic, but i love you babe!
and the german trains out of berlin, the ICE ones, are SO FREAKIN FAST! it was the longest distance of our journey, and the shortest train ride (and most comfortable, these trains were NICE- and ironically the cheapest!)
and we wait for one more train to catch before arriving in amsterdam, and it's cold, but other than that, our whole trip has been nothing but wonderful weather, with the exeception of a few 5 minute showers in rome, and a morning of rain in berlin (that we ended up sleeping thru anyway!) perfect!
finally we arrive in amsterdam, only long enough to catch another train to our plane back into london... so we didn't get to see the city, but we weren't disappointed at all... we wanted to stay another night in berlin and it was SO MUCH MORE worth it anyway. maybe we'll be back to see the abundence of marijuana cigarettes in bars, but wait a sec, i'm from mendocino, and jason's from santa cruz... so what's the big deal anyway? ha!
and to think, just 2 weeks ago we were sitting down in rome to our first proper italian meal.
even if we don't sleep, or have to live off bread for days, have our differences, and heavy back-packs to haul around, uncomfortable hostel beds, loud roommates, flus and colds, our wallets stolen, cramps and sprained ankles, i'll always love you and this was the best month of my life having you in england, and taking me (YES HE PAID FOR EVERYTHING!!!) all over the continent, i love you jason. and i am endlessly thankful to not only have seen all these things, but to be with you, and have found you. you're the best! WOO HOO! let's start saving for round two! xo mwah! xo ♥
