Riku snuck up behind Sora quietly. When he was right behind him, he shouted, causing Sora to start and turn, waving his wooden sword wildly. As Riku sprang, their swords clanked loudly.
Riku lunged, swinging his sword down and in, hitting Sora. Sora stumbled backward, tripped over a rock and fell. The place where he had been hit smarted and tears welled up in Sora’s eyes.
“Only babies cry,” said Riku contemptuously.
Sora waited until Riku couldn’t see and wiped his eyes.
“I’m not a baby,” he said fiercely, standing up.
“Of course not,” said Riku, hoisting his sword. “Ready?”

Riku insisted on bringing Sora along to meet Kairi, despite Sora dragging his heels.
“I thought girls have cooties,” protested Sora. “You said Selphie did!”
“Kairi’s different,” explained Riku. “She’s from another world. Girls from other worlds don’t have cooties.”
“What if Kairi thinks we have cooties because we come from this world?” asked Sora. He frowned at the thought.
“Guys can’t have cooties,” Riku told Sora.
“Oh,” said Sora. “Right.”
He hurried to catch up with Riku as they ran down the path to the Mayor’s house, where Selphie had told Riku that the new girl was staying.

The Mayor’s wife answered the door when Riku knocked.
“We’ve come to say hi to the new girl,” he told her.
“Come inside then,” said the Mayor’s wife warmly.
Sora stuck close to Riku as the Mayor’s wife led them to the living room where a small girl brown-haired girl sat on a couch alone.
He hung back and watched as Riku stepped boldly up to the girl and extended a hand. “My name’s Riku.”
Sora hoped Riku would introduce him, but it wasn’t until Kairi asked, “Who’s that?” that Riku remembered.
“That’s just Sora.”
Sora clenched his fists.

“I really like her.”
Sora sat on the edge of the dock next to Riku, swinging his legs freely.
“Who?” asked Riku.
“Kairi.”
“I don’t.”
“Why?”
“She used to live in another world. If I were her, I would want to leave Destiny Islands, return home,” explained Riku. “All she wants to do is sit around here. She’s the key to getting off this island, I know it, but she doesn’t want to leave.”
There was a momentarily pause.
“Well, I still like her.”
Riku’s face darkened.
“You’re such a baby,” he said.
Sora’s eyes smarted, but he didn’t cry.

A week later, Riku dragged Sora along to the ice cream store. They were halfway to town when Sora realized he had forgotten his money.
“I’ll catch up with you later,” he told Riku before starting back home.
When Sora arrived at the ice cream shop, Riku was already there, sitting with Kairi.
Sora stared at them. He could just barely hear their conversation.
“If I built a raft to get off this island, would you come with me?” asked Riku.
Sora watched as Kairi smiled. “Sure.”
Stunned, Sora dropped his money and ran down the street, afraid of himself.

Sora’s heart pounded in his chest as he ran across the beach. He gasped for air, feeling his lungs burn.
When he arrived at the cove, his heart was ready to burst. He bent double, grabbing a nearby palm tree. He looked up saw Riku and Kairi sitting on the edge of the beach, next to raft, feet touching the sea.
As he gazed at them, highlighted against the sinking sun, Sora felt his chest burn with a different pain.
Then Riku turned, calling out to him, “I thought you would never come.”
Sora grinned and raced over to his friends.

After that, things changed. They didn’t return to normal-not completely-but they came close. Well, as close as they could.
Not an opportunity passed that Riku didn’t seize to tease Sora about his “girlfriend,” but Sora didn’t mind.
Kairi was nice, pretty and sympathetic, and even though he didn’t like her in the way that Riku thought he did, he didn’t it was a bad thing for Riku to think he did. There were other girls Riku could’ve teased him for liking. Compared to Kairi, however, they were nothing.
Kairi was his friend, after all. And so was Riku again.
