Title: Xenophobia
Pairing: Cuddy/Cameron
Rating: G
Disclaimer: House, M.D. is not mine.
Cuddy knew people. It was a skill that helped when trying to run a hospital. Doing clinical work meant working with strangers; managing the hospital meant getting to know the entire staff.
For example, she knew that House was a brilliant, miserable, love-spurned man who had never fully recovered--from either the operation on his leg or Stacy leaving him. She knew that Cameron had suffered similarly, having lost a husband and possibly a child. Neither House nor Cameron talked about their loses, but Cameron appeared better adjusted than House, if only because she hid her pain beneath her optimism.
So when Cameron stopped smiling as often and her sense of morality started faltering, if only slightly, Cuddy blamed House. It made sense. Officially, House was responsible for teaching Foreman, Chase and Cameron medicine. Unofficially, however, pieces of his personality were bound to wear off on his employees.
Nevertheless, the dismal turn in Cameron's personality didn't sit well with Cuddy. Perhaps House needed a vacation. Surely the hospital would survive without him for a week or two. In fact, everyone would benefit: Foreman, Chase and Cameron--even she would.
Just as she was about to page House, Cameron knocked on her partially-open door.
"Yes?" asked Cuddy.
Cameron smiled. "Lisa? I just wanted to give you some candy canes to spruce up your office. It is the holiday season."
Cuddy put the phone down and smiled. Maybe she didn't know people quite as well as she thought.
