A&S The First...

Today was rather interesting, followed by a night of jollity and, hopefully, the first in a line of productive Arts & Sciences nights for the local SCA group.  A dozen people showed up.  Most of the boys hung around in the loungeroom awed by N's large tv screen and Xbox 360 games.  I don't blame them.  It's a little bit warmer tonight but still only around 4C.

There was a large pizza collection + eating of two cakes (I made date loaf, Alys made mandarin & coconut with cheescake topping - yum) then teaching of 9 man's morris (the boardgame), handsewing of veils/fillets, embroidering (couching of pearls & brickstich in 2 corners), cups of tea and watching of Black Books.

Our extensive book collection was fondled, gem crystals were identified, pretty smelling candle collection was sniffed, a dulcimer was tuned and a song played and sung to serenade the ladies present, and a heavy sewing table moved from outside (where it is useless) to inside where it will be used every day, for something.  A productive evening and very glad we own a dishwasher!

The day was odd.  I heard my mobile phone buzzing in silent mode and ignored it as I was still attempting a sleep in.  My last sleep in on my last day of not working.  It buzzed again so I decided to get up and check it out.  Glad I got dressed first as almost immediately afterwards there was a knock at the front door.  It turned out to be my new boss, the main partner in the solicitor's firm.  He'd realised that the two computers he'd bought for myself and the new solicitor I'd be working with, weren't connected to the network and remembered I'd mentioned N knew his way around these things.  So he'd come to ask for help.  Have never, ever had an employer ever casually drop by.  It was rather weird but this is rural Orrrstralia!

We begged an hour to get ready and drop down but he said not to worry until after the office reopens after lunch.  Can you believe it!  I'm going to work in a place that believes in the siesta!  My favourite concept that battles the fatigue of the workday.  Obviously the true Spanish siesta is longer and involves a tapas bar but hey, a girl can dream.  I do love many parts of the Spanish culture and one is their idea of time. We understand each other.  Long lunch involving tequila and chorizo and small lie down, a few hours work in the arvo and then a late dinner. When in Barcelona, we found it extremely difficult to find any food outlet that was open for dinner before 10pm.  Our favourite seafood haunt who's name, from memory, had something to do with a mad pirate, opened at 9.30 and was the closest one to the boat so it won.  Not due to the earlier timeslot but more to do with laziness and it being set in the old gothic quarter.

So I dropped N off at 2pm when the office reopened and went shopping.  Lots of shopping.  After all I'm starting a new job tomorrow (oops, today) and have been living in jeans and tshirts for a year.  I do still have workclothes but it's nice to start afresh.  Picked N up at 5.30 and found out we're both going back together tomorrow...lovely, we can have lunch together and he can also explain the Windows 7 platform to me as I've not used it before.  Better get some sleep.  I have to start work at 11.30am!  Goodnight.
