This month's book club pick is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. It isn't the type of book I usually read, and yet, I finished it off in one go today. I really am grateful to the book club... although there have been times when I've read things I ended up not liking, it's forced me to try quite a few new things.
This book is amazing! I cried. Only the fact I was in public, and didn't want to be the freak sobbing in the corner stopped me from doing more than getting tearful.
It's a story about the lives of two women who live in Afghanistan, and spans about 3 generations there. It starts off with Miriam, an illegitimate daughter to a rich businessman who is forced to marry a 40 year old man when she was 15, and who over time becomes increasingly brutalized by him. It's also about a young girl growing up in her neighborhood who is educated and grows up in a progressive family. Her best friend is Tariq, a neighborhood boy who lost his leg as a young child. In the background there is about 40 years of history, as you find out how the various revolutions, coups, and government overthrows affect the lives of the people who live there. There's so much more to this, it's a beautiful book that's both sad, melancholy, and hopeful at the same time.
