I know I've kind of disappeared for a month or so, but behold! I have returned!
And I've come bearing my opinion on the new Harry Potter book, along with some stuff about the midnight release.
So, the midnight release was so much fun. My friend & I dressed up and got there really early, so we got to see a lot of the people coming in. The costumes were amazing. There was a Whomping Willow, a Fat Lady, and a few people came as House Elves.
Of course, aside from getting the book, the best part of it was meeting a fellow slasher! Mobile, Alabama is NOT a place where I would have expected to find another slash fan, so it was a wonderful surprise.
Now, on to the book. Spoilers start here.
So, after the awesomeness that is Lucius owning a white peacock, we find that Snape is still busy being sexy an evil bastard. This chapter just made me laugh, especially the body revolving above the table. I mean, come on, who wouldn't want THAT centerpiece?
Then we move on to Harry, who is bleeding because he stuck his hand into a trunk which he had stuffed broken glass into. Smart little bugger, isn't he?
Let me just say that I liked Harry's characterization in this book so, SO much more than in the fifth and sixth books. He just seemed more mature, like he had finally grown up. Granted, I still can't believe he made a pit stop in that whore's Ginny's room to snog her. Ugh. I get that Ginny is supposedly all sweet and in love with Harry now, but she's still dated most of the male population of Hogwarts. Harry deserves better.
So, Bill and Fleur get married, which is sweet, even though it ends in tragedy. Auntie Muriel reminded me unpleasantly of my grandmother, though. All the stuff about Dumbledore being not such a nice guy...it made me squee. Because I have ALWAYS said that Dumbledore was a manipulative jackass, and all this just proves me right.
Then they head off to Grimmauld Place. Ohh, and Kreacher! I don't know why, but I am ridiculously attached to that elf, now. The poor thing! And when Harry gives him that locket, it was so sweet. I especially love how devoted Kreacher becomes after that, like he'd been waiting all his life for someone to be nice to him.
Anyways, after they have to leave there, I think that them just kind of traveling around in a tent is so cool. And when Ron leaves, it really makes the point that they're all just kids, still, and that they don't have any idea what they're doing. I can't exactly remember where, but at some point in the book, Ron uses the word 'effing', which is just the best thing ever.
Harry seeing his parents' graves made me cry. :' ( I just wanted to cuddle him...
And Ron coming back was awesome. I love how angry Hermione is, and how she won't talk to him for days. This line in particular: '...as Hermione threw herself down in a chair with her arms and legs crossed so tightly it seemed unlikely that she would unravel them for several years.'
I don't know, I just laughed so hard at that imagery. Like Hermione has unruly shoelaces for appendages, or something.
Dobby dies! *sob*
'HERE LIES DOBBY, A FREE ELF' = love
Now, I feel the need to say that I hated the horcrux idea from the get-go. To me, it was a poorly planned plot device created so that J.K. would have enough material to write a seventh book. So the horcrux-hunting was not half as interesting to me as the Deathly Hallows idea, which just completely ROCKED.
I love how completely Harry latched onto this, while Ron and Hermione try to keep him from going off the deep end.
And then, of course, there is the awesomeness that is Aberforth Dumbledore. I am also continually amazed at Neville's brilliancy, and the ROR's usefulness. The thought that they were hiding tons of people in there indefinitely? Unbelievably cool.
Now, see, though, all the people I care about start dying. Fred, Remus, Tonks, Snape....it's like JK doesn't want me to finish the book. BUT I PREVAIL!
Neville aflame with the Sorting Hat on his head is just too much. I think that's just too weird, even for big V. But, whatever, because I was right all along, and Harry DID die! If only temporarily.
And now, the end. The epilogue was awful. I feel like JK just stuck it on the end without thinking about it at all. I mean, James, Lily, and Albus? Albus SEVERUS?
It just doesn't fit with the rest, to me. And the last line? 'The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well.'
JK should be shot for that. Ugh. fjfisfajd;lfh.
But the strangest thing? It's over. There will not be another Harry Potter book. There will be no more midnight book release parties. Future generations will be able to read them all at once, or may not even WANT to read them. It's good, but it's sad. I think the only consolation I have is that no doubt, fanfiction will continue to be written for years to come.
At least we still have the movies to look forward to, eh?
