The process goes like this:
get musical idea
fiddle with idea on piano
outline form in Reason using blank sections
record individual takes per section
export individual section takes from Reason and import to NoteWorthy Composer for orchestration
arrange piano transcription of each section using preferred instrumentation
repeat for next section
then it's:
record orchestral parts into sequencer
record live parts
???
rock
I've got some of the intro and almost a verse so far (40 measures, just under a minute), but it's slow going because I don't have a lot of energy right now and I'm trying to avoid caffeine for the sake of my stomach. Caffeine would help with the slightly menial task of arranging the parts, which is also the 'hard part' (the part that takes the longest and is the bottleneck for progress). But when I'm done with the orchestrated parts, it's TIME FOR ELECTRIC GUITARS. This is only part 1 of 5 or so, but these ideas have been in my head for a while now and if I don't actually record them and finish this they'll stay there. I gots to PURGE. Just need momentum. Slowly building. The good news is the more I work on it the more I like how it sounds. It's the kind of thing where if I get into a groove I can spend a few straight hours and get a ton done, but I'm not quite there yet.
Part of me wants to abandon it for a while and just whip out some rock songs, especially after having a good time watching Screamin' Cyn-Cyn and the Pons. In the name of maintaining some OUTPUT. Like, I want to feel productive and not like I'm just sitting around at home wasting time. But it's time for something with a little more SCOPE to it, like I've always wanted to do. So bite the bullet and work on it, it shouldn't be a chore.
