Where I'm seeing this pop up, I'm LOVING all the "Well the Post office is in trouble and it's your fault/people's fault because they all want everything for free!" commentary.
I don't think I ever said I wanted the post office to be FREE, and haven't seen anyone else who's freaking out say that either. I've seen "I need the post office to stay less expensive than say FedEx or UPS" and "I don't believe private contractors are going to be the answer or any better."
But no, apparently, people like me who think the USPS is worth saving/don't trust the government to privatize it well are sooo dumb and hysterical.
(I honestly can't think of any situation recently where the government privatized something where it actually functioned BETTER than when it was government-operated as such.)
Meh. I'm just grumpy this afternoon I guess. It's making the occasional bout of "Stop being hysterical" extra I-want-to-beat-them-with-a-wiffle-bat.
No, privatizing things will only make it completely unaffordable. I just looked up the price of sending a single letter overseas to someone, and where the post office would charge a dollar, fedex charges SIXTY.
Yeah. Someone was all "Well you only THINK the post office is cheaper, but it's subsidized with TAXES! You're paying hidden costs already!"
...I suspect that I'm paying a lot less in these hidden taxes than I would be paying if I actually mailed every letter or package I mail in a year via FedEx.
The fact of the matter is that the USPS was partially privatized by Bush Jr, thus leaving them to contract out to private carriers to deliver the mail in a LOT of places. If the service is privatized further or subsidized, then it'll only be more bloody expensive and we can forget about carrier service. It's bad enough that half the delivery people are absolute asses about everything; we don't need the entire thing to turn into that. Besides, if they do that, then they'll lose money. 'cause I sure as hells will not pay all my bills online--some of my bills don't even have that as an option.
