What. The. Fuck.
From Sportsnet.ca:
American defenceman Jack Johnson elbowed Canadian forward Steve Downie in the head after Chipchura's (empty net) goal. Downie went down and Johnson, the third overall pick in this year's NHL draft by the Carolina Hurricanes, was given a major and a game misconduct.
The International Ice Hockey Federation said after the game that it will not review the incident further and Johnson will receive no additional punishment.
How is it possible that he's not getting suspended? That the incident isn't even under review? The play was over, the puck was in the net, and Johnson deliberately skated right at Downie, who was going to congratulate his teammate on scoring and didn't even see Johnson coming. The kid went out of his way to throw an elbow right into Downie's face - not casual contact but a deliberate attempt to injure. I don't care how frustrated you are about not scoring in the game, losing, etc, you do not do something like that.
This isn't me being pro-Canadian. I don't care what country you're from, you don't do that. At the very least, this kid should be suspended for the USA's quarterfinal game. If it was up to me, he would be out for the rest of the tournament and if I was USA Hockey, I would look long and hard at even letting Johnson represent his country again, if this is the respect he shows while wearing its flag.
I hope Downie's all right. I haven't heard anything yet about his status. Has anybody else heard anything?
