If you had the answer to "What stops gun violence?", I'd ask for a spot on your council when you're elected President of Earth.

The anti-gun people seem to be under the illusion that banning guns makes them disappear.

The pro-gun crowd seem to think the solution is to arm everyone.

Somewhere between those two extremes, the answer lies. Like you, I don't know where it is.

Also, I am a gun owner, so I know how I feel about gun control. I use both hands. I also don't think that background checks are a bad idea. I think that the HIPPA (health information privacy thingy) should be changed to make it easier for mental health issues to get into the NICCS background database (that would have stopped Va. Tech). I think background checks at gun shows are a good idea. I also think we should keep our laws forbidding people to own machine guns without a background check including everything short of an upper colonic map.

At the same time, I don't think this'll do anything to stop gun crime. Criminals aren't going to obey the laws anyway. There are laws against murder and they don't seem to respect those.

Put people who commit gun crime away for life for the first offense. That might slow down the crime, but I doubt it.

I'd like to think the idea of getting people in "the hood" the support they need to get out of that situation would also help, but even that probably won't do much.
