Kellie Geist The Kentucky Environmental Protection Cabinet has issued a ban on open burning effective Thursday in Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties.
The counties have been designated as non-attainment for ozone and particulate matter whicih means the the high density of emissions produced in these counties contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer.
The ban will be in effect through Sept. 30, and then, beginning on Oct. 1, the Kentucky Department of Forestry has a ban established as the fire hazard season.
This ban makes it unlawful to set a fire within one-hundred and fifty feet (150’) of any woodland, except between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. local time or when the ground is covered with snow.
The ban set forth by the Kentucky Environmental Protection Cabinet has the following exceptions, unless open burning violates Commonwealth of Kentucky laws or local ordinances:
- Fires set for cooking food for human consumption.
- Fires set for fire hazard prevention.
- Fires set for bona fide firefighter training.
- Fires set for recognized agricultural and wildlife management.
- Fires set for the purpose of disposing of accidental spills or leaks of petroleum products or other organic materials, if no other available and practical means of disposal is economically feasible. Permission from the Kentucky Environmental Protection cabinet shall be obtained prior to burning.
- Fires set for recreational or ceremonial purposes.
The Alexandria Fire District will not issue any burn permits for open burning during the Kentucky Environmental Protection Cabinet's ban on open burning. Contact your local fire department prior to any burning to obtain a burn permit and to find out if any additional burn bans are currently in effect.

I have posted this article as it appeared on their website. The second paragraph is particularly funny. Ignore the repeated "the" and extremely creative spelling of "which". The part that made everyone in my office laugh, then facepalm was the part about particulate and ozone non-attainment. Particulate and ozone non-attainment have nothing to do with stratospheric ozone ("the ozone layer"). The term non-attainment refers to the
National Ambient Air Quality Standards. An area is designated "non-attainment" if the air in that area does not meet the standard. The Northern Kentucky area has an ozone level above the standard (meaning there is a concentration of O3 in the lower-level air that is greater than .075 ppm). In other words, "The counties have been designated as non-attainment for ozone and particulate matter whicih means the the high density of emissions produced in these counties contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer." is equivalent in worth and truth as "My wife loves watching hockey because my dad's neighbor has never owned a wireless router."
Well, I thought it was funny. In the words of one of my coworkers, I'm just sayin'.
