Just saw the pre-aired pilot for The Mentalist and duuude. I'm going to love this show. And so are you!
The Mentalist centers around a mentalist (
what's mentalism?) who uses his talents as he works as a private investigator to solve crimes alongside the police department.
As it is, Patrick Jane is just as tormented, childish and clever as one of my all-time favorite character on television - a certain Greg House, ahem - but more social, more sympathetic and, well, infinitely more doomed.
The show itself is well crafted, with secondary characters full of potential, loads of potential for slash and femslash and, mainly, an inclination toward a profiler-like psychology that I adore. The only person I've doubts about is the lead female, because I'm not sure Robin Tunney is charismatic enough to fuel the 'Moonlighting type' chemistry the two leads are supposed to have, or even to carry a show on her shoulders in a lead capacity full stop, but I'll give her a chance.
In terms of actual plot, it was neither weak nor strong. The case was relatively thin but nicely resolved, and the few twists were brought with humor. Oh, yes, talking about that, did I mention it was fun? Because it is, mainly thanks to Jane's playful sense of humor, and a good team dynamics with the amount of comical interactions it brings. I'd say so far the main fault of the show is that the team appears powerless without its mentalist, but they'll probably get more efficient when the screen time isn't necessary to the main character's exposition and back story.
First of all, meet our hero. Ladies and gents, Patrick Jane.
I bet that convinced you more effectively than my little speech above. OH HAI BLONDIE.
Anyway, let's meet his friends now.
That's his boss, Teresa Lisbon. She plays it tough, but we all know she actually likes his ways. No matter how many times she calls him a jackass.
One of the three cops working under Teresa's orders : WAYNE RIGSBY ! ♥
As you can see, Rigsby is kind of a gay big deal. And according to Patrick Jane (he's a mentalist, you can trust him), Rigsby is a tough, but fair lover. I don't know exactly what it is he does in the police department yet. I suppose if there was an official title for the one who nods at the good ideas and looks perplexed the rest of the time, that'd be his. I don't mind much, though, because he's adorable in his way.
Meet Kimball Cho ; he's the one Rigsby is oogling in the previous picture. Cho is hilarious, you see, because he has no verbal censor. He hands people the truth as if it was a huge steady rock and doesn't really care to wrap it in pink ribbons. I LOVE HIM. Despite him obviously being a hardass, he loves Rigsby. It's subtle, but it's there - mark my words, I'm sure we'll get more evidence of it later.
Last member of the team : Grace Van Pelt. She's a rockie, calls the boss "ma'am" and is incredibly candid. I'd say she's the Rigsby to the boss' Cho. I think they'd be pretty hot, too.
Now that you have met all of them, let's go back to our main character, for purely aesthetical reasons.
He really is tormented. I won't tell you why, but he's not all golden locks and blue eyes. Though he is that too, of course.
Then again, he can also look fucking cute after a sleepless night spent on a case.
That's his 'I almost got killed by the murderer but solved the case, WEEEH' look. *pets his inner child*
And we end on a gratuitous blondie shoot!
So, all in all, it's not perfect yet, but for now it's bloody good entertainment, loads of fun, and I think it has the potential to become great television!
