This post is long overdue, but I got so caught up in collecting pictures that I somehow fobbed off actually posting them. XD
Anyway, here they are now. If you open the images in a new window or save them, they'll get bigger.
These two handsome chaps here, just in case you've never seen them before, are Javi and Fernando. They are extremely awesome and very tall Basques* and play for a most awesome club called Athletic Bilbao.
When they found out that they were called up, they didn't go all "ah okay, I'll go pack my stuff then", they were actually very surprised. Especially Javi, for whom the World Cup was the first A-team experience. It seems that both of them had been
all set for a road trip up and down the west coast of the US with friends when they got the news, and then the road trip was obviously not that interesting anymore. ;) Some of their Athletic teammates actually
cried a little upon hearing the news. Aww. :) And even though there are
obvious advantages of Fernando being on holiday (and Javi, of course, but I have no pictorial evidence of him), I was really glad that the two Leones were at the World Cup this year.
Suits them very well, y/y?
As I said, Fernando and Javi are rather tall. Fernando is actually the tallest Spanish national team player ever with a height of 1.95m. I wish I knew the reason why in the official team picture all the tall guys are standing in the back row, only Fernando is sitting in the front row. I'm surprised he doesn't completely obstruct Mata and Iniesta. ;)
From what I read, Javi and Fernando were pretty much attached to each other's hips when they joined the national team for the World Cup (Llorente had been with the team for the Confederations Cup but Javi was completely new), and
Xabi Alonso facilitated the pair's integration into the group.
Yes, they can be rather obvious. ;)
Random pretty picture of Llorente because I don't know where else to put it in this picspam. If anyone finds me the Javi equivalent, I'd love you forever.
Anyway, one day Javi and Fernando decided to go on a trip to South Africa and win the World Cup while they were at it. The following pics are the best I could find from the event - but be prepared: there are loads!
I had actually assumed that they would sit together, but maybe this was part of their integration process. ;)
Hot stuff coming through!
They explored the area a bit...
... and did some team bonding. (Why did nobody invite me? I feel left out!)
Again, why did nobody invite me? Whatever they were doing, it caused Fernando to have a spontaneous orgasm or something, so I assume it was fun!
Javi knows but won't tell.
By the way,
he likes to show off magic tricks. How awesome is that?
Of course they had some work to do as well. Marca interviewed both
Javi and
Fernando, and if you still don't believe me how awesome these two guys are, you should definitely read the interviews (or the English summaries posted by
con_la_roja).
Furthermore, they did a Q&A for El País,
here (Javi) and
here (Fernando). Their answers weren't as hilarious as those of
Raúl Albiol, but maybe that's a good thing. XDD
Fernando also did a
some promotion for Adidas and Facebook, showing off his tight shirt. He said that the players laugh at him because of it and say that he looks like the Hulk, but he feels comfortable wearing it and it helps with his physical performance. Whatever that means. ;)
This is from a photoshoot they did for Adidas before the final. If you haven't seen the video yet,
go and do it! It's hilarious!
They have to have trained well because otherwise they wouldn't have won the trophy, but I was glad to find out that they had fun at training too.
THOSE LEGS.
Javi is obviously pouting because he can't just grab a feel of Fernando's shapely legs whenever he wants to because there are watchful eyes around them all the time. ;) The players named the hotel they're staying at The Monastery. I really do wonder why... XD
Fernando continues his parading, completely clueless about his teammate's frustration. (You'll have to make it up to him, you know that?)
Jedi mind tricks are so yesterday. Nowadays the cool guys do spontaneous soaring.
Yeah, I'm talking about you.
After a while Javi obviously can't handle staring at Fernando anymore, so he goes to chat with members of the Real Madrid front. (Don't get any ideas, Javi!) I have no clue what they were talking about, but I suppose Iker made some subtle joke about Javi and Fernando, and whereas Álvaro and Xabi are totally getting it, Javi is like "WTF are you talking about?" XD
Though looking clueless is something Javi is generally really good at. ;) *squishes him*
Fernando is clearly enjoying the presence of his teammates. (And in public too!)
The many faces of Fernando Llorente. I love each one of them.
This looks like fun!
I lovelovelove pictures like this. Mmmmmm.
The look on his face is priceless. XD
Happy guys!
My friend always does that to me. Fernando, I feel your pain. ;)
Javi and Fernando spent most of the time on the bench, which is a sad thing but kind of inevitable considering the LOAD of class and skills in the Selección.
Ah well, it gives me (and Álvaro) a chance to ogle Javi's legs.
Then, finally, the big moment came. Xabi Alonso had to be subbed out against Chile and Javi played his first proper game for the Selección. I think he did a great job, and I was so happy when he came on that my parents were giving me weird looks.
It would have been nice if Javi had followed Carles' good example.
In the quarterfinal against Portugal, Fernando got his chance to prove himself. Don't get me wrong, I really like Torres and I would have wished for him to be successful at the World Cup because he needs to put his operation and the bad half-season at Liverpool behind him, but I was so happy that Llorente did such a great job. When he came on, the whole game changed. It seemed like everyone woke up from hibernation or something. Fernando played the Portuguese defense silly, he was everywhere at once, and his physical presence was just amazing. I'm not surprised that he was suddenly the most interesting Spanish player to the press - everyone seemed to want a piece of him after the quarterfinal! XD (And
Carvalho apparently wanted a piece of him during the game, but obviously that was out of the question. XD)
I like it when he's on all fours. (Admit it, you expected me to say that.)
Fernando is shocked at my lack of originality. Sorry, Fer.
THE HEIGHT DIFFERENCE.
!!!!
*coughcough* :D
As I mentioned above, both Javi and Fernando were muchly appreciated guests at press conferences.
Javi, stop daydreaming, you have questions to answer! ;)
Notice a pattern here? ;)
Fernando gave us all kinds of facial expressions during his press conferences.
"Oh dear, I hope Sergio won't tell everyone about that team orgy we had yesterday..."
"Now wouldn't you like to know what happened?"
"Perverts."
"No, I swear nothing happened. Could these eyes lie?"
"Why don't you believe me? WHY?"
"Well, okay, I suppose that MAYBE I could tell you a couple of things..."
"You think you can handle that?"
"OMG, look at your faces!"
"This is the best press conference ever!"
"Now don't complain, you were asking for it!"
"I was merely being generous with details. Mwihihihi. Don't you always say you want details?"
Okay, enough with the nonsense.
I found some celebration pictures but have no clue which game the first two are from (the programme I was watching completely neglected the bench, meh).
MANPILE!!
I swear I nearly started crying when I saw Iker tear up. Aww.
Look, even Fernando is crying!
*glomps them*
After that great final, they lined up to get their medals...
And they jumped around a bit.
¡¡¡CAMPEONES DEL MUNDO!!!
In the Q&A for El País, Javi said that his childhood idol was Fernando Torres (who is only 5 years older than Javi), so I can imagine how awesome it would have been for him to not just win the World Cup but to win it with Torres.
Iniesta totally deserved all the praise he got for the final. His goal was fantastic.
This pic needed to be saved and posted so I can ogle Javi's butt. ;)
Bow down before The Genius.
¡Campeones, campeones, oe oe oe!
There was no chance of del Bosque avoiding this after the team managed to toss Aragonés into the air after the Euro 2008. ;)
Look who snatched himself the cup!
One of the most awesome parts of the celebrations at the stadium was Llorente carrying around David Villa.
Sergio can read my mind.
LOL, now it looks as if Sergio is doing some sort of religious healing. XD
I cannot refuse an opportunity to post a pic of Javi putting his arm around Fernando, even when you can barely see them. ;)
And this is probably my favourite scene. It began with Iniesta making his way through the crowd, carrying the cup, and Fernando and Javi following him around (or rather, Javi was following Iniesta, Fernando was following his Athletic teammate XD).
It doesn't really show here, but I remember perfectly how Fernando kept reaching out for Javi's shirt or shoulder just so he didn't lose track of him.
Do you begin to realise their plan?
Now?
Here goes...
Isn't that adorable? They were carrying him around! Together! I totally died when I saw that, and my second thought was "OMG, I hope there will be pictures!" XD
The couple with the cup. XD
Then Javi got to lift the cup some more.
As did Fernando.
Heeeee! XD
In the dressing room, the Royal Family was waiting for the Selección to offer their congratulations. Fernando, the lucky bastard, gets to hug the gorgeous Letizia, wife of the Prince of Asturias.
Javi isn't really the type to go all OMG when royalty is concerned (watch
this video for proof), so he poses with the inseparable Sevillian couple instead.
Barcelona, Sevilla, Real Madrid, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia. Only Capdevila is missing, then we'd have an ambassador from every Spanish club that was represented by the Spanish team at this World Cup.
Can you spell adorable?
Fernando Torres is amused by the obviousness of Javi and Fernando. ;)
Álvaro del Bosque lifting the cup. :)
According to sources, the plane left South Africa at about 5 o'clock in the morning, but the players look surprisingly non-tired. Or maybe they didn't sleep at all. XDD
After getting the trophy home, they did a trip through the city centre of Madrid and were welcomed by thousands and thousands of fans. How I would have loved to have been a part of that.
They also had an appointment at La Moncloa, the seat of the Spanish president.
KIDS.
La Ola? XD
Iker doesn't know what to think of all that flailing behind him.
The Euro 2008 triumph was followed by a party at the Plaza de Colón, but apparently a World Cup warranted something else, so they went to Príncipe Pio this time. I haven't watched any videos yet, so I can't say whether Pepe did his Camarero joke again, but as you can see everyone had an awesome time.
Tossing Iniesta into the air seems to be the Selección's newest hobby.
Fernando renders homage to Paul the Octopus' great predictions and decorates Pepe with a stuffed animal. XD
Someone clearly missed their vocation as a musical cast. (Am I the only one who would like to see them in the Rocky Horror Show? XDD) Also, note the great poster in the background showing a very blurry Javi.
Fernando's red neckpiece is a thanks to San Fermín, the saint of Pamplona.
Javi's flag says "Aupa Athletic". :D
And they lived happily ever after.

* well, not exactly, but Basque is the co-official language in Navarra (where Javi is from), and Fernando was born in Pamplona, so it totally counts.
