According to
MARCA, Real Madrid have processed an appeal to declare Rubén de la Red disabled.
The consequence of this would be that (1) he loses his licence for the Spanish league and (2) as soon as the disability is confirmed, his contract (he has 2 years left) will be transformed into a pension of 1,500 Euros a month.
The revelation came as quite a shock to the midfielder, who is not willing to accept the declaration of disability. He has undergone several tests since the fateful collapse in the cup match against Irún, but there has never been an accurate, definitive diagnosis of his illness. He is planning to have the matter solved at court.
The Real Madrid squad has declared loyality to its teammate and is following the events closely. As a sign of rebellion, the team captains Raúl, Iker Casillas and Guti refused to sign a an insurance policy that the club has made for each player on Wednesday. With this gesture, the dressing room has firmly declared its position in the matter of Rubén.
To be honest I'm rather shocked about this. I don't see how they can possibly declare him a sports invalid when they don't even know the reason for his collapse. It's clear that he can't return to football as long as there's no definitive test result, but to me this uncertainty is no grounds for a sports invalidity. The tests haven't been able to prove that he hasn't got a serious illness, but they haven't proved the contrary either. The management's attitude in this is unfair and shameful. Especially after all the declarations of support from the management a couple of months ago, I would have expected them to hang on to him, not to make him fight for his rights in court.
ETA:
Apparently the management is forced to act that way because of the employment laws in Spain. I didn't know that. I take everything back. Considering they're still offering him their whole support, maybe things will turn out more or less satisfactorily in the end.
