If you're looking for an absorbing, fascinating and funny book about Liverpool FC which is informative and even political at the same time, you should read Brian Reade's masterpiece "44 Years With The Same Bird" - and if you're a Liverpool fan, you won't regret it. It includes loads of anecdotes about the author's life as a Liverpool fan, some happy, some utterly hilarious, some incredibly sad. He doesn't leave out anything important; all the major stages of Liverpool's development from Everton's uprising rival to one of the Big Four are mentioned, the five Champions League wins as well as the tragedies of Heysel and Hillsborough (Reade attended both matches), and it has an ending so powerful that it almost made me cry. Honestly, the only thing I can actually criticise about this book is the fact that the publishers obviously didn't have a good editor in charge of this book because there are quite a few grammatical mistakes in it.
Unfortunately, the same applies to the publishers of "Withnail And I". And since I read the one after the other, I was soon incredibly frustrated. You know how picky I am with comma rules especially, and when I have to read two books in a row in which the writer/editor obviously threw a coin whenever he wanted to put a comma somewhere and then put one when the coin showed heads and left it out when it showed tails. I can't even reproach them of not knowing about their language's comma rules because sometimes they get them right! GAH. But I guess it tells something about the quality of the two books that I read them and even enjoyed them despite the comma annoyances. Of course, "Withnail And I" is nothing more than the script of the film, but it includes some pieces of dialogue that are not in the film, and it's just awesome to read.
When I found "Equal Rites" and "Mort" in the mail, I never would have thought I'd have finished them only a week later. I was busy as always, don't get me wrong, but somehow I couldn't put the books down. I understand now what you guys said about the first two "Discworld" books being Pratchett's worst. "Equal Rites" and "Mort" were a lot easier to read, and also funnier and wittier (or at least that's what I thought). Granny Weatherwax is one of the most awesome characters EVER (especially when she's interacting with Cutangle XD), and I also adore Death to... death (*LOL*), especially when he's working in that restaurant and putting bowls of milk on the floor for the cats. SO DAMN FUNNY. And Cutwell, because he shares my love for food. XD Ah, I could go on and on about how awesome this series is. Unfortunately I didn't order the next two books in time, so I have to read something else until they arrive.
I'm currently reading "Beste Reisegeschichten" by Ephraim Kishon, a hilarious satirical book about travelling. You can read a couple of stories, like for instance "A Gondola for Two"
here (about the gondolas in Venice) or "Bullshit Artists" (about the bullfighting in Spain) and "The Champ Chump" (about trying to book a hotel room). If you have a couple of minutes to spare, you should read at least one of these. ;)
