This Time Its Goodbye | txilar | 622 | Remus/Sirius
They flew over the houses
Clipped the buildings wide
Flew over the rooftops
This time its goodbye

Remus blinked twice as he held Harry back. His arm tightened convulsively, and for a split second, he was reminded of Dumbledore holding him back. He shook his head, pulling Harry back and decided he’d think about that later.
Remus didn’t believe it, couldn’t do anything but believe it, didn’t want to believe, but had little choice. Ministry officials questioned him, poked and prodded as if he wasn’t even human, and he had to remind himself many times that he wasn’t, until finally Dumbledore, exercising influence as their once Headmaster, led him out of the small interrogation chamber.
Sirius stood at the other end of the hall.
Remus’s entire body jerked and he bolted but Dumbledore was quicker than Remus had ever imagined he could be. “They’re taking him to Azkaban, Remus, there’s nothing you can do now.”
He struggled, clawed at Dumbledore’s hands, not speaking, desperate to get away, to get to Sirius. But for what he had no idea.
Dumbledore held tight, petting his hair, like a dog, Remus thought absurdly. Sirius is the dog, not me, until his body stopped straining and went limp.
“What will they do to him?”
“He’ll be there for the rest of his life.”
“What a life.” Remus laughed bitterly. “I didn’t even get to say goodbye. To any of them.”
Sirius snuck into Remus’s room late one night. “Remus,” he crooned. “Moony, wake up. Professor!”
Remus finally stirred, sitting up and blinking at the light filtering in hazy windows. “What? What’s wrong?” he asked around a yawn.
“I’m cold.”
“That’s not something a professor handles, you delinquent. Why’d you wait so late?” Remus crossed his arms on his knees as Sirius undressed and crawled in bed.
Sirius shrugged. “Waiting for people to go to bed. Finishing a bottle of Firewhiskey. You know me. I have an appearance to uphold.”
Remus laughed as Sirius drew close, trying to steal his warmth. “Everyone sees through you. You’re a big fluffy dog for good reason.”
Sirius looked up at him, tongue hanging out and panted madly, pushing him back and crawling over him, licking behind his ears, along his neck and at his lips, while his hands tickled under his arms, ragged nails pitching Remus into sensory overload.
Remus gasped and tried not to yell. “No, no, Sirius, please, no,” he begged in between laughter. He squirmed and pushed but Sirius held on as Remus laughed hysterically while pushing uselessly at his hands.
After getting his fill of Remus’s laughter, Sirius laid his head on Remus’s chest and listened to his pounding heart. It was Remus panting now as he tried to catch his breath. “Nothing cures me like the sound of you laughing. I haven’t heard that sound in years.”
“I hate being tickled and-” Remus started.
“And you hate being wet. I know. Goodnight.”
Sirius curled around Remus and fell asleep before he heard any reply. He dreamt he couldn’t find Remus. He dreamt that he woke up having never found him. He dreamt that Remus was gone when he woke.
Remus woke him, shaking him frantically. “Voldemort’s after Harry, I have to go.”
“I’m going with you, Remus.”
He dreamt that he looked for Sirius in Azkaban, but all the cells were empty. He asked, ‘Where is Sirius?’ but no one looked him in the eye. Not even Dumbledore, when he said, voice echoing, “There’s nothing you can do now.”
When Remus woke, he was alone, on the wrong side of the bed, one arm numb underneath him.

[eta] I guess now isn't the time for Regulus/Sirius fic huh? So, Remus/Sirius it is. Something I originally wrote as a 'goodbye hpliterotica' piece but never ever finished. it languished in my 'simmering' folder until now.
