I don't like change either. There's a blue bar that always appears at the top of my friends page informing me that I'm using the old friends page and that I should switch to the new one instead and "try to customize" it. The "try" leads me to believe it is very different from the old friends page and that I wil probably not like it.
My thing is that I love the "new comment" feature for when you go back to entries on your friends page to see if there are new comments, especially for entries that end up having a lot of comments. It that feature still there? I guess my question is, I don't really care about the friends page itself, I just want to know: can I still easily identify new comments without having to track posts and get messages via my inbox/email all the time? I already track some entries and communities but it can get quite unmanageable and it's sometimes just easier to go back to the entry and click on comments and find the new comment notification next to the new, uh, comment.
How many times have I used "comment" in this comment? Any comments on that?

I have no idea what you are talking about, so I'm going to say no lol. I did notice that is a new feature on on the homepage though!
I just rely on email notifications to tell me if I have new comments, but that is not entirely reliable. So having that comment feature on the homepage is pretty nice.
Well the old friends page basically is your flist, but with your journal layout right? Well the new one is the same thing, but no journal layout. I've never tried customizing it. Everything else is the same. The comments to the entries hasn't changed and you can still see the yellow "new comment" notification. It's basically the layout that has changed, that's all. When you go into someone else's entry or a community, everything is how they have their journal setup.
I use to have my journal layout for my comments as well, but changed it to this because it seemed easier to read for me. I got use to seeing it in 12's journal and spoiler discussion posts and I liked it better.
I don't usually go to the homepage either. I usually go straight to the friends page, but every now and then I would visit it so it wouldn't feel neglected. Now it has a new layout, shows "new events/entries", new comments and visitors to your blog.
Oh, OK. I'm so glad that feature is still there. It's probably one of the most useful things LJ ever added. Thanks for the all the info. This has helped me understand what they've done. I think I'm still going to keep the old friends page, though, just to be annoying and see how long it will take LJ to get fed up and switch it over for me. LOL. Consider it to be a sort of study.
