HAPPY SUNDAY!!

Oct 23, 2011 21:09

Finally a day off.  A much deserved one I might add after a very long work week with only an even more stressful one ahead. Oy.  Let's not talk about it.

So I'm going to try and tackle a few reviews in this post.  Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries and The Thing will hopefully all be covered.  Yes, I finally got caught up on Supernatural and I really need to start watching live again.  Friday nights are kinda crazy sometimes, but I'm going to give it my best lol.

Last night, Nick and I did a dinner and a movie.  I was so glad he and Mom convinced me to go out at the end of the night.  It's been so long since I've had some fun and Nick and I always have  a great time together.  Dinner was at a local Mexican restaurant which turned out to be interesting when our host was a little flirtatious with me as he sat us and as he checked us out.  He was just being polite and charming, but Nick didn't seem to see it that way lol.  A protective big little brother lol.  Bless him.  So after his little rant on the way to our vehicle we hauled ass to San Antonio for a movie.  I love The Thing and it's one of my favorite all time movies.  I get wary about remakes and such things, but I was pleasantly satisfied with this one.  It's a prequel to what happens in the 1982 version.  I'll get into more later.  On to the reviews!

Fandoms

Supernatural:

This show never disappoints.  Never.  I'm putting "Defending Your Life" in my all time favorite episodes category.  The episodes had me in tears and it's been awhile since Supernatural has been able to do that.  Joanna Beth Harvelle.  I never thought  I'd hear that name again.  I was never a Dean/Jo shipper, but I loved her nonetheless.  She was strong, confident, reliable and she loved the Winchesters.  It took me a while to accept her and Ellen's deaths.   Forever bitter, but to see her again and have that closure with Dean was beyond beautiful.  Seeing all the flashbacks to illustrate Dean's guilt was absolutely heartbreaking and had me all nostalgic.  The boys have grown so much since season one.

This moment in particular had me stifling a sob while tears flowed down my face.  It wasn't a pretty sight, take my word for it.

I found it interesting how Sam was able to take everything he has done and been through and was able to move past that; where Dean holds onto everything and couldn't fathom being able to release any of it.  It made my heart break more for Dean and admire Sam.  With all the devastation they have both endured Sam is able to see the silver lining in life and he doesn't let it tear him down.  He fights against the darkness in his life, he always has, and keeps moving forward.  Dean doesn't know how.  He buries everything under a hard exterior and alcohol.  He doesn't allow himself relief from the guilt, the regrets and could-have-beens because he deems himself unworthy of it.  It's who he is.  He just goes through the motions with no real emotions to tether him to the world.  Dean loves Sam, but I think he is more afraid of being alone than anything else.  He would be lost without Sam, but doesn't know how to reach out to him.  It's all very sad and I can't help but want to hug them both.

"Shut up, Dr. Phil" was a good filler episode.   Seeing James Marsters and Charisma Carpenter together on my TV screen again made me a very happy fangirl.  Leave it to Supernatural to get them together again.  Again, I love this show.  What I liked most about the last two episodes is that they are beginning to focus more on Dean's alcoholism, with Sam calling him out on it.  I'm yelling, "Finally!" at my TV, because, seriously, it's been a long time coming.

The Vampire Diaries:

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was another fabulous episode.  Season three just keeps getting better and better and it's already become my favorite season.  Where in season two I was only interested in Tyler and Caroline's story-lines, I find myself more and more invested in the entire show this time around.  Tyler and Caroline are still my main priority, but with the addition of Klaus and Rebekah and the return of Ripper!Stefan I just can't get enough of this show.

It's the first day of high school and senior year for most of our characters, and after prank night turned out to be a bust our seniors may be less than enthusiastic about First Day.  Well with the exception of one Mr. Tyler Lockwood, who is in a uncharacteristically good mood despite dying and coming back as a vampire-werewolf hybrid.

So we had some intersting things happen with just about all our characters in this episode.  Elena is become proactive in protecting herself and has enlisted the help of Alaric to teach her the ways of vampire defense.  As much as I was rolling my eyes at everything Elena said and did in this episode, I couldn't help but have this "Finally!" moment when she started taking steps to protect herself.  It just seemed a little too late and it is stemming from Stefan's new/old personality coming out more intensely now.

Speaking of Stefan I am LOVING everything about him.  The role reversal of the brothers is a little cheesy, but honestly I'm liking Stefan as the sociopath more than Damon.  Paul Wesley just has this way of bringing out the coldness of Stefan.  His behavior, mannerisms and the way he speaks is void of the Stefan we came to know and love.  Paul is KILLING it and I hope he stays this way for a while.  I'm enjoying the hell out of him right now.

Then we have Jeremy, Bonnie, The Ghost Exes and Matt.  Jeremy is still seeing Anna, Bonnie is jealous and Matt and Vicki are screwing everything to hell.  Bonnie went from boring to annoying in three seconds flat.  I understand that she can be jealous, but HELLO you did this to him.  Yes, she saved Jeremy and we are all forever grateful, but she was told there would be consequences.  Being jealous that your boyfriend is seeing an ghost who happened to be an ex is a little ridiculous.  I really hope they go with Bone and Matt at this point.  I'm still very much a Jeremy/Anna shipper and they just keep sucking me in.  Love them.

Matt and Vicki.  What the hell?  I would do anything for my brothers and sisters.  Anything, but bringing them back to life is a little out there.  I just couldn't feel sympathy for either one of them.  They fed into Matt's man pain yet again and I couldn't stomach any of it.  I get that he's lonely, but he did this to himself.  He pushed the people that loved him away.  His friends were the ones who have been there for him and he never saw them as being important because they were not family.  At this point Matty, your friends ARE your family.  So I pretty much ignored all of his and Vicki's scenes.  I really hope that was the last we saw of Vicki.  I looked forward to her return and I was pretty much disappointed.  Oh well.

Katherine and Mikael were also interesting.  We still didn't find out why Mikael has been entombed since the 90s, but we did find out that he can kill Klaus and doesn't feed on human blood but that of vampires. Which wasn't good news for Katherine as he violently fed on her.  I'm sure that's not the last of Katherine, I'm not sure that being fed on by another vampire will kill them.  I'm very excited about Sebastion Roche in the role of Mikael.  I've been in love with this guy since he played Jerry Jax on General Hospital.  I'm sure most of the TVD fandom recognizes him from either Supernatural or Fringe.   Those of you who don't know Roche, the guy can and will deliver.  Trust me.

We then have Tyler, Caroline and Rebekah.  In the beginning of the episode Caroline called Tyler her boyfriend (FLAIL!!), but when Tyler kissed Caroline (How cute was his "Happy First Day?") Elena seemed to be a little embarrassed by the public display of affection.  Why?  Tyler and Caroline have spent every day together all summer, I'm sure they all saw this coming.  Or maybe it had to do with eveything that went down during prank night and Tyler's new hybrid state.

The real important thing about the scene was that we find out that Tyler is already indulging himself with blood, saying Rebekah hooked him up with a blood bag.  I'm not so sure about that one and I said in my post about the webclip that I doubted that Rebekah would give him a blood bag when she wouldn't drink one herself.  Which proved itself with the last Tyler and Rebekah scene.  I can understand why Tyler wouldn't be put off by the blood with having spent so much time with Caroline, so that didn't bother me, what bothered me was that I didn't believe him about it being a blood bag.

Later we see find out that Tyler is embracing his vampire side during football practice.  Trevino said in an interview that Tyler has all these new toys to play with and that he would indulge himself right away.  We see that when Tyler compels his coach to end practice so that they could go get drunk at the bonfire.

Tyler had time to figure out and control his werewolf side, but being a vampire is completely different.  With that comes heightened personality traits and with Tyler his cocky/entitled side is coming out to play and Caroline isn't happy about it.  Tyler assures her he's in control and for her to basically get of his back about it.

Later the gang has decided that taking Stefan out of the equation is the best thing to do and in Stefan's best interests, "But not for Klaus's" says Tyler.  Um, what?  It turns out that Tyler has been sired by Klaus.  According to Damon, Tyler feels loyal to Klaus because it was Klaus's blood that made him.  It's rare, but it looks like not so much in hybrids.  Well isn't that just awesome. *Insert sarcasm*  So Damon has vervained Tyler and the gang goes about their plan, leaving Caroline to deal with Tyler alone.

I'm still unsure about the whole siring situation, but it opens a door of possibilities concerning Tyler.  He subconsciously feels loyal to Klaus and how will that affect his relationship with his friends and family?  I'm still waiting for that conversation between Tyler and Carol about his new and unique supernatural state by the way.

Klaus will make his inevitable return to Mystic Falls and he's going to want his "assets" those being Tyler and Elena.  I'm yet again curious to see how Tyler will act once Klaus is back in the picture.  Just how much influence will Klaus have over Tyler?  Tyler is his first hybrid and I have no doubt he will be special to Klaus.  They have had no interaction since Tyler is turned and what plans Klaus has for him is still unknown.

Back at the Lockwood Mansion, Tyler wakes up and ends up arguing with Caroline about his behavior through out the day.  Caroline tells him that he's been sired and he's acting like the pre-werewolf d-bag she would never be friends with.  That hits home with Tyler who has tried to change himself from that guy he hated so much into the person he is now.  Caroline tells him that with being a vampire comes challenges and that he needs to be careful.  He promises her and in a touching moment he tells her that the everything he likes about himself is her.  I love how as they kiss they wrap their arms around each other.  Plus THEME MUSIC.  These two have such a beautiful bond as friends that as a couple it seems so natural for them to be able to be so affectionate towards each other, when they haven't been together for so long.

My shipper heart was soaring, but I couldn't help but have an ominous feeling after that scene, I'll get into it more later.  We come back to TC after the two have done the deed (SQUEE!), Caroline is getting dressed and getting ready to leave when Tyler calls her out on always running out on him, "You have to earn the over-nighter" Caroline tells him and Tyler accepts the challenge.  I just love them okay, they are so perfect.  Please don't ruin them show.  Look at them, they practically glow.

It was Tyler's "Just don't hate me" line that really stuck out to me.  Tyler is forever seeking acceptance and approval from the people in his life. From his parents to his friends and we can probably add Klaus into the mix now.  I think that this part of his personality will come into play in the future.  His feelings for Caroline have become so strong and intense that he's afraid of losing her.  What I fear is that if Tyler continues to act erratically that it will tear a rift in his relationship with Caroline and that will send him over the brink.  A life void of the one person he's come to trust, rely on and love will, in my opinion, destroy him.  Add the fact that Rebekah has decided to infiltrate everything in Caroline's life which includes Tyler and Tyler has a very slim chance of holding onto what makes him recognizably Tyler without the love and support of his friends and family.

On to Rebekah, who has decided to be Team Timberwolves when she showed up in Alarcic's AP American History class.  How awesome was that?  A vampire hunter teacher, a doppleganger, three vampires and a hybrid all in one class. I loved it.

That scene with Damon...

One of my favorite moments of the night. Rebekah is older, stronger and just like her older brothers extremely clever and smart. She saw right through Damon and I loved it. Her prescence in Mystic Falls is going to turn the town upside down. She's been alive for a thousand years and has been out of the loop since the 20s. She's bored and she's going to keep herself entertained while Klaus is away and she's set her sights on Caroline. She wants her spunk, her popularity and maybe even Tyler. Let the battle of the barbies begin!

I was curious to see what kind of influence Rebekah would have over Tyler in the episodes to come.  I knew it wouldn't be a good one.  Caroline would try and teach Tyler how to control his vampire urgers where Rebekah wants him to give in and indulge himself.  I didn't think it would happen so fast.  SECONDS after Caroline leaves, Tyler whirls around to see Rebekah standing in his home and she's brought him a little present in the form of one of her fellow cheerleaders with an open neck wound.

I just love Trevino and all the subtle things he does as an actor.  As he notices that there is fresh blood on the poor girl's neck he takes in this breath and you can see he's already beginning to struggle to control himself.  Okay, okay, so I'm also shallow and good Lord the man's hot.  Don't judge me.

I felt for Tyler in this moment.  Before he was turned (again) you saw how terrified he was and with good reason.  Tyler never wanted any of this, but it's happened to him nonetheless.  When Rebekah brings him his "gift" he tries to fight the urges (the lip tremble, again Trevino is flawless), tells her she should leave but it's the mention of Klaus and fresh blood that wins out.  Tyler rushes the girl and within a second is sinking his brand new hybrid fangs into her flesh.

It was all very heartbreaking to me.  Tyler isn't going to be upfront with Caroline and tell her that he's feeding from humans and it's the lies that I'm afraid of.  Now that's he's gotten a taste for fresh blood I don't see him stopping anytime soon.  Sooner or later Caroline WILL find out and I'm not looking forward to that AT ALL.  I'm not ready for the big angst, but the hybrid story line is going better than I initially thought.

Last but not least...MASON!! FOREVER IN MY HEART MASON IS BACK Y'ALL!!  *Flails*

But seriously Mason, you come back and your first thing is to go beat up Damon?  I know he killed you and all, but GO CHECK ON YOUR NEPHEW BECAUSE HE'S ALL FUCKED UP.   Sheesh.  I'm going to hand wave that away because Taylor Kinney is back on TV screen and yeah that trumps all.

SPOILER ALERT: I've heard from a few people that Tyler will not be in the next two episodes (WTF NOT?!) so I'm seriously disappointed that we will be stripped of a Lockwood family reunion.  Not cool TVD, not cool.

The Thing was very well done in my opinion.  The mystery of The Thing wasn't dragged out and the movie got right into the action and scary moments pretty quickly.  The movie takes place a few days before we pick up in the original 1982 version.  The visual effects were great and it wasn't overly flashly and didn't take away from the tension and scare of the moment.  Unlike the 1982 version, we see The Thing a lot more in it's alien form.  Which led to a lot of "Holy shit" and "I can't watch this!" moments for me.  I love horror movies and when I get the chance to catch one in theaters I like to have fun.  This movie definitely did that for me.  Plus, GIRL POWER.  I don't want to give too much away.  I highly recommend that you try and catch this one in theaters.  The ending was very clever and the movie gave a nod to the original score with it's own rendition that took me back to the first time I saw The Thing.  It was that ominous dun-dun that set the mood for that fear of the cold and dark.  A real must see, try checking out the original before to see some cool parallels.
