While I was at my daughter's, who has no TV or internet access, I read a bunch of books by Amanda Quick (aka Judith Krentz(sp?)) called the Arcane Society series. They're Victorian era mystery-romance, but they are alot better than the description would suggest.
There was another mystery series all having something to do with a woman restoring a big old Victorian house in some small town in New England somewhere. The names all have something to do with construction terms, but I'll be darned if I can remember the author or the titles. Hate it when that happens. When I find out, I'll pass it along.
For straight mystery and suspense, try Harlan Coban. He's very good, but more along the lines of James Patterson's style. Who is, by the way, an excellent author you should try if you haven't yet. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.
