More about my trip to Zapata

Interest was expressed in exactly what I was doing in Zapata, flying in planes at low altitude.

I work for the Department of State Health Services. One of the programs that is administered by our unit is the Oral Rabies Vaccination Program or ORVP. This program was started back in 1995 because too many people were being exposed to rabies by infected coyotes and foxes.

During the year we keep track of where wild coyotes and foxes show up with rabies. Then during January we blanked the area with tasty treats with a little trick built in. If a coyote or fox eat our treats, they will be protected from rabies. If they don't get rabies, they can't spread rabies.

We fly at 500ft so that we can have good control of where the bates land. Seems kinda rude to drop one on a car driving down the highway. And it's not a good idea to drop them into someone's yard. These vaccines are not for domestic animals, for reasons that I don't totally understand.

This year, we will drop almost 3 million doses of oral rabies vaccine.
