We did the Koliada yesterday. Somewhere around 16 courses, which is damn impressive without meat! Kutiah(sp) is to die for - SteveP makes the best version of this oldest cooked food. Apparently, the root of Kutiah is the same as "to cook". This cooked seeds dish might very well have come down from just post-glacial living, 11,000 years ago - give or take. Definitely a sacred dish! I suppose I should learn the recipe myself. (Instead of mooching off Steve! But his is SO-O good!)
What else? borscht w/mushroom stuffed ushkis(sp - I don't spell Slavic), beets and mushrooms, beans and mushrooms, cabbage rolls, pierogies with mushroom gravy, pickles, pickled beets, pickled herring, bread w/salt and honey, salmon, cherry vodka, mead, tea, chocolate-dipped clementines w/salt. Garlic in most things. And, I'm missing a bunch of dishes that I'm blanking on. Everyone had TOO MUCH, which is, after all the definition of a feast. Excellent food as in years past!
Unfortunately, I had to get up for work at 3am. So, I'm running light on sleep. As some famous guy said, "And so to bed."
