This ep gives us the first light bulb moment for Josh based on something Donna says. A great example of how her throw away comments can trigger something in his mind that he many not have thought of otherwise. Gotta love the smile on his face, with his hand supporting his face. For me this episode is filled with classic lines "You're quite the nerd Mr President", "Good a place as any to dump your body," "Birthday message". I love the whole opening dialogue between Josh and Bartlet as Bartlet shared his National park trivia. Also loved that overhead camera angle.
Bartlet's smack down of Hoynes jars with me. It smells of two boys having a pissing competition. It was petty and belittling and was one of the few times I didn't like Bartlet. Now I've never really understood the antagonism between these two: "You shouldn't have made me beg". C'mon. Did Jed seriously think all he had to do was offer VP and Hoynes would immediately say "Yes" If he did, that's a bit naive on his part. It's a big decision and I'm sure sweeteners had to be offered. That's life in the ranks of big business.
Mention is made that it has been six months since the cabinet met. Don't they meet regularly to, I don't know, run the government??
Love the amount of references to Josh not being an outdoors man - "Since when are you outdoorsy?" "You've never climbed a tree in your life" and "I've tried nature", hee hee.
Of course the other highlight is the Sam/Mallory/Leo birthday card/message farce. Why oh why did Sam feel the need to tell Leo he and Mallory had a date? Silly boy!! Loved Leo and Bartlet tag teaming each other. We get to see Sam's anal tendencies come to the fore and then LOL, at the end Toby joins him in trying to nail it. They really are a couple of geeks! I'm not in the camp that hates Mallory but she really did need to give her dad a break.
Bartlet says while commenting on the use of the Antiquities Act "this is simplicity itself". Is this a metaphor for Donna? Something I wondered as I heard it. What do you think? I love that each time I watch I gleam something new. That is what makes quality TV, my friends.
